Polkadot Ecological Decentralized Storage Crust's Exploration in the Field of IPFS Storage

Crust provides a decentralized storage network for the Web3 ecosystem, supports multiple storage layer protocols including IPFS, and provides interfaces to the application layer. Crust
's technology stack can also support a decentralized computing layer. Crust aims to build a distributed cloud ecosystem that values data privacy and ownership.

At 8 pm on December 30th, the Crust Network team discussed Polkadot with host Yvonne at the "Polka Moon" event hosted by Defigo, and analyzed the areas of Polkadot, Crust and IPFS storage.

The following is an excerpt from the speech of Youan, the head of Crust brand.

Can you briefly introduce the Crust project?

Crust:
Crust provides a decentralized storage network for Web3. We are a decentralized cloud blockchain technology based on Polkadot ecology. We have now joined the Substrate Builders Programme and successfully graduated from Web3.0 bootcamp. At the same time, Crust is the first batch of projects sponsored by the Web3 Foundation Grant.

Our project was established in 2018. With the rapid increase in the total amount of global data and the gradual exposure of the disadvantages of centralized storage, Crust has discovered this market pain point and is determined to build a project with the purpose of application landing.

Many people, including friends in the group the day before yesterday, asked what is the difference between Crust and IPFS as a storage network. In the storage process, IPFS is at the storage layer, and Crust is at the incentive layer.

Explain this way, you can compare decentralized storage to "didi taxi", the "driver" is the storage node, and the node has extra storage space to use as a node; the "user" is the storage user, and the person with storage needs ; And Crust is to open up the bridges on both sides, responsible for monitoring the work of the nodes and incentivizing and penalizing the nodes.

Crust borrowed TEE technology to solve the problem of node workload reporting, and proposed a GPoS consensus mechanism to deal with the incentive problem of nodes.

After two years of development and testing, the Crust mainnet is expected to go live in the first quarter of next year.

Moderator:
Compared with other decentralized storage projects, what are your highlights?

Crust: The
first highlight is that Crust uses TEE technology.

TEE exists in the hard disk of the Crust node, and mainly provides two functions in the entire storage service:

1. Privacy protection. As an industrial-grade mature technology, TEE is being used by many mainstream manufacturers for data encryption. For the user's sensitive data, TEE encryption can make the storage node itself unable to read the user's privacy.

2. Report the workload of the node. The TEE module will periodically check whether the node is working properly and whether there is any error in storing user data, and then upload the workload report to the chain. Compared with Filecoin's zero-knowledge proof algorithm of cryptography, Crust is much faster in encapsulating data than Filecoin, and compared to FIL's large number of cryptographic calculations, the workload of Crust nodes is meaningful.

Meaningful Proof of Work is also our second highlight. MPoW is the workload proof mechanism of nodes. Like PoW, its core is "work more, get more money", which reflects fairness, but the essential difference from PoW is that the workload of nodes is meaningful.

The last highlight is the GPoS consensus to solve the incentive problem of Crust storage nodes. In the Crust network, each node will have a staking quota corresponding to the storage space it provides. The more storage provided, the higher the staking quota.

The revenue of the node is calculated based on the number of staking. The node does not need to buy coins for pre-mortgage in Crust, and the node can accept mortgages from other currency holders, which greatly reduces the cost of mining.

Therefore, Crust combines the fairness of PoW and the efficiency of PoS, as well as the privacy data processing capabilities of TEE.

Moderator:
You just mentioned that one of the biggest problems solved by decentralized storage is privacy protection. What methods does Crust use to protect the privacy of stored data?

Crust:
User data is encrypted and stored by TEE on the node side. At the same time, TEE technology can also protect data sovereignty. In other words, for private data, no one except the user can obtain the user's data.

Our column in this issue is called "Poca Moon". Can you tell us why Crust chose to join the Polkadot ecology? What is your layout for Parachain Slot Auctions?

Crust: In the
early development of Crust Network, we also considered the ecology of Ethereum and Cosmos. In addition to the technical disagreement, we were not very satisfied with the degree of ecological development. At that time, Web3 actively responded to us and provided a series of technical and even financial support. The Polkadot project's style was relatively pragmatic and stable.

Polkadot is committed to bringing everyone's innovations together on this platform, and at the same time incubating the cloud ecosystem, even with a lot of funds for direct funding, so I think such a platform is suitable for development teams and is open enough. We have high hopes for the Polkadot project and look forward to the prosperity and development of this ecology.

Crust has always been paying attention to and learning about parachain technology, and we will also participate in the Polkadot slot auction next year. At present, some DOT currency holding institutions are actively contacting us, and Crust will screen high-quality investors and institutions. The specific auction layout cannot be disclosed for the time being, but as the only storage project in Polkadot, we are relatively confident in the Parachain slot auction.

I heard that your incentive testnet is underway. Can you briefly introduce the progress of the testnet?

Crust:
After nearly two years of development and testing, Crust has now entered the final incentive test network stage before the mainnet launch. Our test network is expected to have two rounds, the first round is for node configuration testing, and the second round is for user service market testing.

It is the 30th day of the first round of testnet "Ark Project" today. Crust has incentivized 300,000 CRU rewards for nodes in the first test. As of today, there are 973 Crust nodes all over the world, with a total storage of 67 PB.

I am very happy that our Ark Weekly has been reposted and recognized by Gavin Wood on Twitter, and more and more people are participating in the Crust test.

Friends who are interested in our testnet can go to the homepage of our official website, https://crust.network/, to find the entrance to the "Ark Project" and a complete guide. In the second test at the end of January next year, we will continue to reward miners. Please pay attention to Crust.

Moderator:
In addition to the preparations for the testnet and parachain slot auctions in the near future, does Crust have any other progress that I would like to share with you?

Crust:
As mentioned earlier, our first test is for node testing, then the second test Crust will test the entire storage service market. In order to cooperate with the storage market promotion, we launched the storage market pass CSM. The total amount of CSM is 200 million, which will be distributed to the community for free through activities. No less than 100 million CSM will be launched before the mainnet launch. The remaining CSM will be released later in cooperation with the storage market promotion.

At present, we can also find free CSM mining activities on our official website. Interested friends can look at this link.

In order to cooperate with the CSM announcement, we have designed a series of community activities related to the "storage market". Everyone is welcome to participate and gather more wool.

Moderator: The
recent hot spot is actually a bull market in the currency circle. What is your opinion on the trend of BTC in 2021? What about the trend of CRU? What do you think will be the hot spot in 2021?

Crust:
I think the trend of BTC next year is very optimistic. Many traditional funds and institutions are continuously joining the Bitcoin game. VISA and Paypal have announced the support of cryptocurrency transactions, which will have a profound impact on the crypto industry.

In addition, some governments have also issued compliance policies, such as Singapore’s foreign exchange compliance licensing policy and Taiwan’s DBS Bank’s announcement of the launch of a digital trading platform, which indicate that BTC will be pushed to a new level.

Crust will participate in the auction of Polkadot slot next year. Polkadot, as the leading ecology of Web 3.0, is believed to bring about an explosion. In addition to the hot spot of Polkadot slot, if Crust can run the entire storage service market in the second test, when the mainnet goes live, Crust's market value will be close to mainstream centralized storage service providers.
