Poor girl speaking at Tsinghua graduation ceremony

Speech by Graduate Representative Zhang Wei at the Tsinghua University Graduation Ceremony for Undergraduates in 2019 – Perseverance and Responsibility

Dear teachers, relatives, friends, guests, and dear students:
Good morning , everyone! I am Zhang Wei from the Department of Industrial Engineering. It is a great honor to speak here as the representative of the 2019 graduates.

A few years ago, we met each other because of Tsinghua Park. Inadvertently, Qingfen Garden opened, the dining spoons in the cafeteria were changed, and the trees on both sides of Xuetang Road grew new branches, and we grew into a better us. I always feel that our students are lucky. We have witnessed the completion of the art museum together, saw the first batch of students enrolled in Schwarzman College, witnessed the first batch of students entering the campus after 00, and got to know the ancient tomb discovered not long ago." "Alumni"... The bits and pieces of the past few years have come to my mind at the moment of parting. At this moment, the first thing I want to say is thanks, thank you all teachers, relatives and friends who care about us, encourage and support us, thank you!

I come from Zhenyuan, Gansu, a state-level impoverished county on the Loess Plateau, with inconvenient transportation, limited educational resources and relatively backward economy. I still remember the first time I went to the provincial capital to participate in the experiment part of a physics competition. I didn't even see the equipment used in the competition. When I finally found the instrument switch, the experiment time had come. That was the first time I realized that the education differences in different regions were so huge, and the short-term loss also planted the seeds of changing the current situation of education in my hometown in my heart.
After three years of hard work in high school, I was lucky enough to be a part of this garden. Principal Qiu told us at the opening ceremony: "Tsinghua students must have an idealistic spirit" and "heed the call of their hearts, break through the fetters of reality, and pursue meaningful and valuable life goals." Four years of university life taught me that the key to achieving life goals is to be persistent and responsible.

Persistence means still cherishing hope in the trough, and moving forward firmly despite the difficulties.
Because of my weak foundation, I often fall into self-doubt. Calculus homework takes three or four times longer than others. The election for squad leader was unsuccessful, and the application for the practice team leader also failed. Sit-ups scored only 20 points for 100 points... In "Ordinary World", Sun Shaoping said: "One Ordinary and ordinary people will always feel overwhelmed by the waves of life. Will you be overwhelmed? Unless you are willing to sink into it! "
We have all experienced various difficulties and setbacks, and we have suffered in the long night. Think about it and cry loudly in no one's corner, but as long as you clenched your teeth and persisted, life will surprise you. Later, I participated in the debate competition and won the title of "Good Voice of Debate" with my friends; I passed the sit-ups, became the monitor and started to guide the practice detachment, and successfully won the academic excellence scholarship.

I did not live up to the words that I wrote in my diary at the time: "In any case, don't shrink back, don't work hard, don't give up." We will not be overwhelmed by difficulties, gritted teeth with tears, and must persist until the last moment. !

Responsibility means to remember Tsinghua people's family and country feelings, not forgetting their original intentions, and sticking to their ideals.

In 2017, I met a mother and her 3 children in a cave dwelling in Yinjiacheng, a destitute town in Gansu. My mother was illiterate, and my father died unexpectedly. There was only one table in the house and no lamps, but the three siblings studied very hard. I still can't forget the mother's helplessness, the holes in the child's clothes and the light in the eyes. I know what I should do.

Through our efforts, this difficult family finally received long-term academic funding support from a charity organization in Beijing. In the past four years, I have carried out 8 public welfare practices in Gansu, Yunnan, Shaanxi, Inner Mongolia and other provinces. I began to realize that Tsinghua people have the responsibility to pay attention to society, and our efforts really have the power to ignite a single spark!

The feelings of home and country are reflected in the determination of Tsinghua people for graduation. Senior Shen Xiaodong of the Institute of Education went to Jinzhai County, Anhui Province to serve as the principal of a primary school after graduation, dedicated to the rescue and education of children in need; Rizin Dundup from the School of Journalism, who graduated with us today, went back firmly after walking out of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. After graduating, they will work as a grassroots worker in the grasslands of northern Tibet; and Hu Kai from the law school resolutely joined the army and vowed to contribute to the dream of a strong army... In the face of thousands of choices, they gave up the “most Excellent solution" has jumped out of the "comfort zone" of life and moved to the place where the motherland needs it most.

I also always remember the ignorance of the original aspirations that I wanted to contribute to education. After the research was successful, I decided to postpone my admission for one year and join the Tsinghua University Graduate Teaching Team. Tsinghua University has cultivated us to be "people with a mission and pursuit of excellence." My parents hope that I will not forget "drinking water and thinking about the source." My friends hope that I can do what I really want to do, and I want to "do something in less than a year." Things you will never forget"!

Time does not live, but the future can be expected. We not only have unwavering determination, courageous and resolute character, but also the feelings of family and country and the passion for unremitting struggle for ideals! We will never forget the love and tears in our hearts. Thanks to Tsinghua University for giving us more powerful wings to soar into the sky. We will not forget our original intention and stick to our beliefs and ride the wind and waves to the sea!

  thank you all!
