At the age of 17, she and her husband came to Dali, Yunnan to support education for the sake of the construction of the motherland. With such a stable life, she felt happy even if the conditions were difficult. But something unexpected happened and her husband died of stomach cancer, leaving her alone. Having lost her spiritual support, she was afraid of being moved by the situation, so she went to Huaping, Lijiang to teach. She originally wanted to carry her husband's will and pass on knowledge to the mountains, but things didn't work out and she was diagnosed with uterine fibroids. When she was penniless and had no one to rely on, she thought about ending her life. Life, but the wheel of fate pointed happiness towards her. After hearing about her condition, the magistrate of Huaping County wanted to donate money for her treatment. Such a poor place, but the people's kindness is so rich
"As long as I am alive, I should make some contribution to them." This became Zhang Guimei's best interpretation of repaying their kindness.
After returning to school, she discovered that girls in her class often dropped out. So she went deep into the mountains to understand the students' conditions through home visits. She discovered that her parents let their daughter do farm work at home, while her younger brother who was in primary school went to the county town for tutoring. Only then did she truly understand that poverty was only one of the reasons, and the shackles of ignorant thoughts were the root cause. The idea of favoring boys over girls and inequality between men and women still exists in remote and backward areas.
The only thing that can change this situation is knowledge. So she decided to open a free high school for girls only. Change the destiny of their generation and their descendants. For five years, she traveled around. By chance, I received a 2 million yuan grant from the government. In September 2008, Huaping Girls' Senior High School officially opened. Those girls who were deprived of the opportunity to go to school returned to school and started a new life. She worked tirelessly and got up early every day to urge the children to go to school. Even though she was exhausted, she still endured the pain and taught the children.
Not giving up, not complaining, and doing her best for the children is what makes her happiest.
