The connotation of big data-"more than just big"

On September 9, 2014, Apple (Aple) launched a mobile phone, iphone6, with a screen size of 4.7 inches, which is much larger than previous models. The ad copy is "Bigger than bigger". In the beginning, there were many "god" translations of the copy in China, such as "big endless", "big difference", "bigger force pattern", "more force pattern than force pattern", and so on. In the end, Apple Hong Kong gave a full-sounding translation: "More than just big", which made the dust of these three words settled.

With the help of the word "big" in Apple's copywriting, we also talk about the connotation of "big data". For big data, we must first correct an error-prone concept, which is that "big data" is equivalent to "big data", but otherwise, big data is more than big!

Forrester analyst Brian Hopkins defined "Big is more than just big" as the definition of "Big is more than just big." So, besides "big", what are the connotations and characteristics of big data? What is the basis for judging whether certain data is big data?

In fact, the standard for measuring big data is the widely accepted 4V feature in the industry (4 English descriptions with V as the first letter):

Volume (large volume)

Variety (more forms)

Velocity (fast speed)

Value (high value but low density)

Because of IBM's reputation in big data research and application, many people believe that the first three V features were first proposed by IBM. In fact, the first person who used 3v to describe data characteristics was Moug Lane, a data analyst from META Group. In February 2001, he wrote a report entitled "Three-dimensional Data Management: Controlling the Volume, Speed and Variety of Data".

In response to the growing trend of e-commerce development, this report analyzes the challenges and opportunities it encounters in the three dimensions of data management (Volume, Velocity, and Variety), which are collectively referred to as "3V". However, the "3V" feature mentioned by Lini at the time was based on e-commerce, which was very different from the "3v" in the era of big data. Considering that Meta Group has been acquired by the famous consulting company Gartner, therefore, in a sense, this "3V" feature is still proposed by Gartner.

In June 2011, International Data Corporation published a report "Extracting Value from Chaos". The report pointed out: Big data technology describes a new generation of technology and architecture designed to collect data at high speed (Velocity). , Discovery and (or) analysis, extract the value (Value) in a very economical way from the ultra-large volume (Voliety) scan code treasure hunt data with different modalities

In other words, on the basis of the aforementioned 3V features, IDC has added a new V feature to big data-Vale (value), which is collectively called the "4V" feature, which is widely spread and widely accepted. These 4 V features, like 4 filters, can filter out those "false" big data.
