KaOS 2021.01 release

KaOS released the first update of this year- 2021.01 .

KaOS is a desktop Linux distribution, which features the latest version of the KDE desktop environment and other popular software programs that use the Qt toolkit. It was originally based on Arch Linux, but since April 2013, developers started to create their own software packages, which are now available from the KaOS software repository. KaOS adopts a rolling release development model and is only for 64-bit computer systems.

One of the noteworthy changes in the new version happens to be related to Qt, because KaOS 2021.01 happens to be the first  ISO to use Qt 6 . Of course, this does not mean that Plasma is ready to migrate to Qt 6, but applications that can be built with Qt 6 in this version have been completed, such as Poppler, Strawberry, Qsynth and Qtkeychain.

KaOS 2021.01 also added a new GUI tool for handling systemd services, because the systemd-kcm used before has not been maintained for many years. The current alternative Stacer can also be used as a system cleaning tool to handle starting applications.

KaOS 2021.01 newly added applications include the Matrix chat client Neochat, and the newly added PyQt 6 protocol stack, including Sip 6, PyQt-Builder, PyQt6-sip and PyQt 6.0.0.

Other updated packages include LLVM/Clang 11 (11.0.1), Python3 3.8.7, ICU 68.2, Boost 1.75.0, Git 2.30.0, Protobuf 3.14, Hdf5 1.12.0, Poppler 21.01.0, Mesa 20.3. 3. NetworkManager 1.28.0, Libarchive 3.5.1 and Samba 4.13.3 etc.
