Youtube-dl is an open source Python command line tool for downloading video content from thousands of video sites including Youtube. The project has 7.2w+ Star on GitHub and has a large number of users. RIAA believes that the tool violates Article 1201 of the U.S. Copyright Law, accusing it of “circumventing technical protection measures used by authorized streaming services such as YouTube” and “copying and distributing these videos” without authorization from RIAA, and requires GitHub to remove all upstream and downstream content. There are more than 20 code repositories for the Youtube-dl project. Ricardo Garcia, the author of Youtubei-dl, said that he found out that his project was forcibly taken down without receiving any notice.

Supporters of Youtube-dl believe that the project itself does not infringe any copyrights and is completely a legal tool. The RIAA alleges only one of its uses, which is equivalent to a kitchen knife that can hurt people, so it is the same as banning a kitchen knife. In fact, Youtube-dl does have many legitimate uses, including downloading some academic institutions, government materials, etc., and many users use it to download and backup videos uploaded by themselves.

Because of the fermentation of this incident, many people who didn’t know Youtube-dl also knew this very useful open source tool. Many old Youtube-dl users started to upload their code backups to GitHub. Various Internet channels. Before the incident, there were only more than 20 Youtube-dl related projects on GitHub, but now more than 4,100 can be found.

In response to this matter, GitHub officially updated the DMCA announcement issued earlier, and added a warning that prohibits users from publishing the source code of the removed project. Users who violate the rules may be blocked.
