Delete the library and run the upgraded version, the famous big factory employees resigned to retaliate the company, directly delete the virtual machine!

Programmers all over the world are the same, they will do destructive behavior when they are pressed...

1

Programmer from India

In California in the Atlantic, there is a programmer named Sudhish Kasaba Ramesh, because the name is relatively long, we will call him SKR later.

SKR is a programmer from India. He is working in the United States with an HB-1 visa (a work visa for the United States). He is about the same age as me and 30 years old.

If it wasn't for joining Cisco, he would be an ordinary programmer, and no one knew him, and it would be even more unlikely that he would do such a big thing in the industry two years later.

SKR's previous experience is not very clear, but he joined Cisco at the time in July 2016. It is estimated that he did not do very well at this company, and soon left in April 2018.

(The picture comes from the Internet, not the person)

Did a terrible thing

It may be that the breakup with the former employer Cisco was so unpleasant that SKR was still very upset after leaving the company for 5 months, so he remotely connected to Cisco's system on AWS without authorization.

Maybe it didn't expect that after leaving the company for so long, it could still log in to the company's server directly. It can be seen that the authority management of large companies around the world is also very common.

Maybe the mood was not very beautiful at the time, so a code was deployed in the Google Cloud Project account, and the function of this code exploded.

After running this code, 456 virtual machines used for the Cisco WebEx Teams application were directly deleted , which provided video conferencing, video messaging, file sharing, and other collaboration tools.

Due to SKR's behavior, more than 16,000 WebEx Teams accounts were closed for two weeks, and Cisco spent $1.4 million to restore the process.

In the end, Cisco refunded more than $1,000,000 to the affected customers. Fortunately, none of these customers' data was lost or leaked. Maybe the data is still better.

Keep going to work

After deleting the virtual machine, SKR did not "delete the library and run away" as everyone thought, but continued to find a job to work on the West Coast.

And his new boss (Stitch Fix) admires him very much. After hearing about this, he even hopes that he can continue to work normally (what a big heart).

In today's society, if you do bad things, you can't get away. After Cisco fills up this big hole, SKR will be sued in a blink of an eye.

So the IT circles all over the world know this thing...

After the first trial, Judge Ramesh pronounced the verdict. The final hearing will be held on December 9, 2020. Currently SKR has paid $50,000 to return to the residence.

SKR's defense attorney James Reilly stated that the lawyers in this case have agreed to set the crime level at 19; according to the US "Federal Sentencing Guidelines", the corresponding sentence for this crime level is 30 to 37 months.

SKR may face up to five years in prison and a fine of $250,000.

At last

In recent years, there have been many cases of "deleting libraries and running away" in China, and some have caused huge losses for listed companies. At the same time, the above case shows that the authority management of well-known American companies has not done well.

There is a problem on Zhihu: how to prevent programmers from deleting libraries and running away.

Relatively many objective conditions, such as strict authority management, strict process specifications, strict data backup, and dual-active solutions.

This is all prevention and measures from the technical or management level, but no matter how it is managed, it is difficult to avoid the incumbent programmers having these permissions.

So the essence is: the actual occurrence of "deleting libraries and running away" is in the final analysis an outbreak of irreconcilable contradictions between the company and employees. If it weren't for a very big grievance, no programmer would be willing to do such an awesome career!

The best way to avoid losing both ends is to eliminate the problem in the bud...
