The world's top open source projects gather at the Bund Conference to draw a new blueprint for an international open source ecosystem

With the rapid development of science and technology, open collaboration has become a catalyst for technological innovation. Globally, open source is also an eternal theme in scientific and technological exchanges.

On September 7, the Open Source Sub-forum of the 2023 Bund Conference was held in Shanghai. This forum was hosted by Ant Group, with the theme of "Building an International Open Source Open Innovation Ecosystem". It brought together outstanding domestic and foreign open source foundation project representatives, investors and open source entrepreneurs to discuss the international open source ecological blueprint. Currently, 97% of software developers and 99% of enterprises worldwide use open source software.

Representatives of outstanding open source foundation projects at home and abroad discussed what kind of open source technology the industry needs. Keith Chan, head of Linux Foundation Asia Pacific, pointed out that cloud native can provide better resource efficiency and operate the same number of services on fewer servers. High elasticity and availability can also bring higher development speed and reduce risks. Currently, more than 240 open source container orchestration engine Kubernetes (K8s for short) service providers have joined Linux.

Ma Hongbin, a member of the Apache Kylin project management committee of the open source distributed analysis engine and a founding member of Kyligence, shared three ways to participate in Kyligence's co-creation of an international open source ecosystem, integrating the experience of three different types of projects: Apache Kylin, Gluten, and Byzer, and bringing Here comes multi-dimensional sharing of development paths for different types of open source communities.  Since its inception, Kyligence has begun to cooperate with multinational companies, including discussing the project's positioning and community operation methods with teams from international technology companies such as Intel and Meituan, and participating in community co-creation with domestic and foreign company teams to build open source with a transnational perspective. ecology.

"A good open source project is inseparable from a deep understanding and insight into technology, and where are the pain points of the current industry." This is the first step for an open source project to go in the right direction, and it is also a very important step. Zhang Chenyu , the project maintainer of Harbor, the first Chinese project to graduate from CNCF, said that Harbor targeted the industry pain points at the time. At the same time, it lacked easy-to-use image management tools, and also lacked the permission control and user management required in enterprise scenarios . , as well as security and other related functions, provide storage and management capabilities for cloud native products, as well as rich functions to meet the needs of enterprises for security, stability and scalability.

More and more cutting-edge technologies are choosing open source

Complex and cutting-edge technologies have also ushered in many excellent open source projects in recent years. Yang Yang, founder of the "Copper Lock" project, a cryptographic open source algorithm library under the Open Atomic Open Source Foundation, shared his experience in open source of complex technologies. Yang Yang has been deeply involved in the field of cryptography for many years, and also promoted the copper lock project to enter the incubation process of the Open Atomic Open Source Foundation. Tongsuo completed the donation from Ant Group to the Open Atomic Open Source Foundation in April 2023, becoming an incubation project of the foundation, and is actively preparing to establish a Project Working Committee (PMC).

As an important participant in open source, enterprises play an important role. Wang Xu, vice chairman of Ant Group’s Open Source Technology Committee, shared Ant Group’s open source strategy and the role of open source in the entire technological innovation. Wang Xu believes that for enterprises, open source has four values: mechanism, influence, trust, and community. These four values drive the inside from the inside out, and then from the outside to the inside, thus forming community-driven growth. "When we see community R&D-driven processes and cross-project collaboration mechanisms, we also hope that we can learn internally. The real meaning of open source is to unlock the power of the community and interact with the community to promote innovation. Open source itself does not produce innovation, but it can become Catalyst for innovation. The more open a community is, the more obvious it will be as a catalyst for innovation.”

Open source talent training and evaluation system to build sustainable open source

At the heart of an open source project are developers. How to provide talent support for the sustainable development of the open source ecosystem?

Wang Wei, a professor at East China Normal University, a ToC member of the Mulan Open Source Community, and a director of the Open Source Society, shared the practice of open source education in colleges and universities, “From teaching people to use open source to teaching people to use open source, through a generalized and standardized model, we will cultivate A new generation of open source talent.” As the founder of X-lab Open Laboratory, Wang Wei also shared the open source project evaluation tool OpenRank developed by the laboratory. This is a value evaluation algorithm based on network relationships, focusing on collaborative relationships and collaborative units, which can promote developers The large-scale collaboration among them guides developers to enhance the value of collaborative units, resulting in symbiotic growth of developer and project value.

The final roundtable session of the forum used a unique method of live podcast recording. Rio, the host of the technology podcast "Kernel Panic", discussed the potential of building an international open source community with guests such as Wang Wei, Wang Xu, Keith, and OpenInfra Foundation Asia Director Li Haoyang. challenges and share practical methods for reference. The roundtable has conducted multiple rounds of discussions and deliberations on various key aspects of talent system training, open source technology, and enterprise participation in open source, and has produced many unique opinions. The views provided by the guests at the Bund Conference will provide a new perspective and draw a new blueprint for the international open source ecosystem.
