Introduction: With the popularity of new network technologies, such as RDMA, the latency of modern distributed applications has been reduced to milliseconds or even microseconds. This creates new challenges for building system software. Rust's zero-cost abstraction and memory management capabilities can bring new opportunities for building new types of distributed applications. I will share my experience in using Rust to build new system software in user mode and kernel mode, including how to use Rust to abstract the underlying abstraction of RDMA hardware and how to build a millisecond-level container startup mechanism in the kernel.
