Adaptively Up-Sampling Point-Sampled Models

Summary

Adaptive upsampling of point-sampled models is one of the key techniques for constructing point-based multi-resolution surfaces. In this paper, we propose an upsampling algorithm for point models. Our algorithm first defines a smooth manifold patch for each point in the model according to a local projection process defined by the well-known moving least squares (MLS) method. The effective upsampling region is computed for each point by constructing a local Voronoi diagram of the point and its neighbors. The region is then up-sampled according to a grid constructed on a local plane, which is usually governed by the local curvature of the surface and a given sampling control function. By collecting upsampled points, a dense multi-resolution point model can be obtained.
