Detailed steps to install openwrt 22.3 on virtualBox7.0.6 under Ubuntu22.04

Today, we are going to talk about the process of installing the OpenWRT 22.03.3 software routing system in virtualBox 7.0.6 in the Ubuntu 22.04 environment, which does not involve the settings of network devices and related routing.

  1. Download the OpenWRT x86 image file ext4-combined img.
We use the ext4-combined image instead of squashfs. Afterwards, the ext4 partition can be expanded as needed. The combined-squashfs is the traditional openwrt layout, because it cannot be used for the root file system and partitions. Rewriting is not conducive to demand follow-up. If the physical machine is operated, it may involve the problem of uefi startup. You can refer to the method of making the installation image of the physical machine on the Internet, so I won’t go into details here.

  2. Decompress the image file
After downloading, we get an openwrt-22.03.3-x86-64-generic-ext4-combined.img.gz compressed file, which must be decompressed.

gzip -df openwrt-22.03.3-x86-64-generic-ext4-combined.img.gz
  1. Convert the OpenWRT image file to VDI
step 2 and compress it to get the openwrt-22.03.3-x86-64-generic-ext4-combined.img image file. We also need to convert it into a partition image file that can be used by virtualbox.
