Jakarta EE Developer Survey 2023: Chinese community participation is particularly high

The Eclipse Foundation has launched the 2023 Jakarta EE Developer Survey Report . The results show significant growth in Jakarta EE usage and growing interest in cloud-native Java in general.

The Jakarta EE Developer Survey aims to provide insights into the needs, preferences and perspectives of developers in the Java ecosystem; to help the Java ecosystem better understand the evolving landscape of cloud-native enterprise Java and what this means for their respective strategies and businesses What. This year's survey ran from March 14 to May 23, 2025, with a total of 2,203 participants, an increase of 53% compared to last year.

This year’s survey is also available in Chinese, Japanese, Spanish and Portuguese. Officials stated that the participation of the Chinese Jakarta EE community was particularly high this year, with more than 27% of responses coming from China.

Here are some key findings from this year’s survey:

  • Spring/Spring Boot, which incorporates elements of Jakarta EE, remains the main Java framework for cloud native applications, accounting for 66% (up from 57% in 2022). Jakarta EE usage is stable at 53%; MicroProfile usage is declining slightly, from 30% in 2022 to 26% in 2023. It should be noted that the operation of Spring/SpringBoot relies on Jakarta EE development and does not necessarily compete with Jakarta EE. Both are critical factors in the health of the enterprise Java ecosystem.
  • 28% (25% in 2022) of respondents will develop cloud-native applications to replace some or all existing services, while 24% will modify existing Java applications to move to the cloud (2022 is 28%). 22% of respondents currently run Java applications in the cloud (up from 18% in 2022)
  • Despite only being released in September 2022, Jakarta EE 10 usage has grown to 17%.
  • More than 60% of respondents (59% in 2022) said they have already migrated or plan to migrate to Jakarta EE in the next 6-24 months.
  • 17% of respondents are running Jakarta EE 9/9.1 in production (up from 14% in 2022), and 28% are currently running Jakarta EE 8 in production (up from 24% in 2022)
  • The Jakarta EE community is very interested in applying innovations implemented in Java SE to Jakarta EE (30%). The report points out that this is a good sign that the Jakarta EE 11 release plan is on the right track to adopt the new features of Java SE 21.
  • The top five cloud platform vendors among respondents are Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform, Alibaba Cloud and IBM Cloud.
  • Jakarta EE’s five top community priorities are:
    • Better support for Kubernetes 50% (51% in 2022)
    • Better support for microservices (48%)
    • Adapting to Java SE innovations (such as logging and virtual threads) (30%)
    • Improved support for serverless (25%)
    • Existing Java EE/Jakarta EE or cloud providers provide faster support, improve support for testing and accelerate the pace of innovation (23%)

Mike Milinkovich, executive director of the Eclipse Foundation, said: "In 2023, cloud-native Java will continue to grow, and open source will lead the way. The release of Jakarta EE 10 really opens the door to this transformation, and when we set our sights on Jakarta EE 11, Our community hopes to achieve this by delivering new and enhanced APIs and embracing the Java language and platform."
