Esxi upgrade tutorial (5.1 to upgrade to 5.5.0 for example)

A former Upgrade Preparation:

1. Check Compatibility List

2. migrate all virtual machines, and enter maintenance mode

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

II. Installation file upgrade

1. Preparing to install / upgrade files

1.1. VMware-VMvisor-Installer-5.1.0-799733.x86_64.iso (installer)

1.2. VMware-VMvisor-Installer-5.5.0-1331820.x86_64.iso (installer)

1.3. VMware-ESXi-5.5.0-1331820-depot.zip (upgrade package)

2. with the installation package upgrade esxi

1. The first system version Esxi 5.1.0

 

 

 

Loading the installation package VMware-VMvisor-Installer-5.5.0-1331820.x86_64.iso 2. restart. Esxi disk installation has previously selected.

 

 

 

3. Upgrade / Install selection

There are three options:

1. Upgrade Esxi. VMFS data retention, and configuration (registered virtual machines with serial number, etc.).
2. Installation Esxi. VMFS data retention, but the configuration will be lost.
3. Installation Esxi, covering VMFS data, configuration will be lost.

III. Offline bundle file upgrade

1. open SSH connection

 

 

 

2. View the current version

vmware -vl

 

 

 

 

Upload file VMware-ESXi-5.5.0-1331820-depot.zip

This Esxi host, only one store, so the VMware-ESXi-5.5.0-1331820-depot.zip files in the root directory.

 

 

 

 

/vmfs/volumes/datastore1/VMware-ESXi-5.5.0-1331820-depot.zip

 

 

 

 

3. View update support.

 

 

 

Here choose to update ESXi-5.5.0-1331820-standard.

esxcli software sources profile list -d /vmfs/volumes/datastore1/VMware-ESXi-5.5.0-1331820-depot.zip

 

4. Perform the upgrade

 

 

 

esxcli software profile update -d /vmfs/volumes/datastore1/VMware-ESXi-5.5.0-1331820-depot.zip -p ESXi-5.5.0-1331820-standard

 

5. After the upgrade is successful restart

 

 

 

 

 

IV. Online Upgrade

1. Prerequisites

 Esxi host can access hostupdate.vmware.com website (domestic access is very slow).

 

2. Check the version to be updated (in Esxi5.x for example).

esxcli software sources profile list -d https://hostupdate.vmware.com/software/VUM/PRODUCTION/main/vmw-depot-index.xml | grep ESXi-5

 

 

 

 

3. perform online upgrade

Here to upgrade to ESXi-5.5.0-20150901001s-standard example.

esxcli software profile update -d http://hostupdate.vmware.com/software/VUM/PRODUCTION/main/vmw-depot-index.xml -p ESXi-5.5.0-20150901001s-standard

 

After the restart, the upgrade is successful
