VSAN6.x shutdown

Close vSAN 6.x cluster

Matters to be considered before the operation:

  • Verify that all objects of state:
  • Run the following command from a cluster of ESXi hosts, get all the cluster objects vSAN report:
    vsan.obj_status_report -t
  • Run the following command to run the health vSAN script and dump the output to a text file:
    Python /usr/lib/vmware/vsan/bin/vsan-health-status.pyc> /tmp/health_status.txt
  • Run vSAN Health "Object health" checks to ensure that no objects can not be accessed.

To turn off vSAN cluster, do the following:

  1. Close all running on the cluster vSAN non vCenter Server virtual machine.
  2. Record host vCenter Server virtual machine resides.
Note: VMware vCenter Server is recommended to migrate virtual machines to ESXi host first to open again can easily locate the virtual machine when vSAN cluster.
  3. As a best practice, make sure vSAN components are currently no resynchronization. Resynchronization may occur for a variety of reasons, do not necessarily indicate a lack of policy compliance. Check the inspection object policy compliance vSAN health. For more information, see Administering VMware Virtual SAN "Monitoring Virtual SAN cluster resynchronization task" section.
  4. Close vCenter Server virtual machine. This will make the vSphere Web Client is not available.
  5. ESXi host connected to the shell. For more information, see the Using ESXi Shell in ESXi 5.x and 6.0 (2004746) .
  6. All ESXi host in maintenance mode. You can use a CLI method supports setting vSAN mode when entering maintenance mode to do this. You can log in directly to the ESXi Shell and to do this locally run ESXCLI command can also be used ESXCLI call this operation on the remote system. You can also use vSphere host client host in maintenance mode. For more information, see the vSphere Resource Management Guide "will host in maintenance mode" section.
  7. When entering the maintenance mode, run the following command and make sure ESXCLI select No Action option:
    # System maintenanceMode the esxcli the SET to true -e -m The noAction
  8. Close all ESXi hosts. You can log in to each ESXi host using the vSphere Client or ESXi shell. You can also use the vSphere API (such as PowerCLI) remote to do this.

Open vSAN 6.x Cluster

To open vSAN cluster, do the following:

  1. Or physically start the ESXi host through a remote console session.
  2. And connected to each ESXi host using one of the following exit maintenance mode:
    • Use vSphere host client
    • From the shell run the following command: esxcli system maintenanceMode set -e false
  3. Find vCenter virtual machine and use vSphere Host Client power on virtual machines.
  4. Use vSphere Host Client, connect to your ESXi host vCenter virtual machine resides. Turn on the power of vCenter Server
Note: If you have this virtual machine in step 2 of the shutdown process moves to the first ESXi host, you should for the first ESXi host.
  5. Use vSphere Web Client to connect to vCenter Server.
Note: It may take a few minutes before they can re-use the vCenter Server.
  6. Perform a quick health check on vSAN cluster. Check the network partitioning and components are re-synchronized. For more information, see:
  7. Open vSAN cluster power of other virtual machines.
