You can use Amazon data Lifecycle Manager (Amazon DLM) to automatically create, retain, and delete snapshots for the backup Amazon EBS volumes and production. Snapshot automation management can help you:
-
To protect important data by implementing a regular backup schedule.
-
Internal Auditor or as required compliance backup copy.
-
To reduce storage costs by deleting outdated backups.
Combination with Amazon CloudWatch Events and monitoring capabilities of AWS CloudTrail, Amazon DLM provides a complete backup solution for EBS volumes, at no additional cost.
Lifecycle Policy
Lifecycle policy includes the following core settings:
-
Policy Type - effectively target resources to define policies that can be managed and the type of operation. If not present, the default is
EBS_SNAPSHOT_MANAGEMENT
. -
Resource type - AWS resources policy management. EBS volume and is supported EC2 instance.
-
Target label - the label must EC2 instances and EBS volumes or associated to management by policy.
-
Plan - Define and create the maximum number of frequencies to retain a snapshot of a snapshot. Snapshot creation began within an hour after the appointed start time. If you create a new snapshot for the maximum number of snapshot volumes retained beyond, the oldest snapshot is deleted.
The following considerations apply to the life cycle policy:
-
You will activate the status of the policy is set to enabled after the policy began to create a snapshot. You can configure the policy is enabled upon creation.
-
Strategy began to create a snapshot within one hour after the appointed start time.
-
Influence the policy of EBS volumes if you modify the policy by deleting or changing the target label, the label will no longer have affected by this.
-
If you plan to modify the name of the policy, the snapshot is created under the old plan will affect the name of the policy is no longer affected by this.
-
You can create multiple policies to back up volumes or EBS EC2 instances. For example, if there are two EBS volume label, where the label A is to create a snapshot every 12 hours of target policy A, tag B is to create a snapshot every 24 hours policy B of the target, according to both the Amazon DLM a strategy plan to create a snapshot.
-
When you copy a snapshot policy creation and retention plan will not be transferred to the copy. This ensures that Amazon DLM does not remove snapshots should be retained for a long time.
