People familiar with the matter, who asked not to be named, said that the two parties are finalizing the terms of the agreement to use the ChatGPT function in iOS 18, Apple's next-generation iPhone operating system. Apple has also been in talks with Alphabet's Google to license the company's Gemini chatbot. These discussions have not yet reached an agreement but are ongoing.

A deal with OpenAI would allow Apple to quickly make a popular chatbot available to users as part of a slew of new artificial intelligence features it plans to unveil next month.

Bloomberg reported in April that discussions between Apple and OpenAI had intensified. However, there is no guarantee that a deal will be announced soon.

Representatives for Apple, OpenAI and Google declined to comment.

Apple plans to showcase its capabilities in the field of artificial intelligence at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference in June this year. As part of its push to advance artificial intelligence, the company will run some of its upcoming artificial intelligence capabilities through data centers equipped with autonomous processors, Bloomberg reported.

Last year, Apple CEO Tim Cook said he personally uses OpenAI's ChatGPT, but added that "there are some issues that need to be worked out." He promised that new artificial intelligence features would be introduced in Apple products "on a thoughtful basis."

During Apple's earnings call last week, he believed Apple would have an advantage in artificial intelligence.

"We believe in the transformative power and promise of artificial intelligence, and we believe we have the advantages to stand out in this new era, including Apple's unique combination of seamless integration of hardware, software and services," Cook said on the earnings call.
