Apple has reportedly informed its supply chain, including battery suppliers such as China's Desai and Taiwan's Xinpu Technology, of its preference to shift iPhone 16 battery supply to India, according to the Financial Times. Apple encourages suppliers to relocate existing production capacity to India to expand production in the region.
Given the critical nature of battery components in terms of user safety, any errors in battery assembly are unacceptable. Since the certainty of Apple production in India is not yet clear, this move carries certain risks.
In recent years, Apple has been moving some of its iPhone assembly operations from China to India to reduce production risks. Analysis of the manufacturing distribution of Apple's iPhone 15 series in 2023 reveals Foxconn's dominance, with India's Tata Group only producing specific Plus models. Apple seems wary of shifting production entirely to India until production standards at its Indian manufacturing plants are confirmed, especially for models with relatively low demand.
In an environment where smartphone components, such as core processors and camera modules, are constantly evolving, upgrades occur almost every year. However, smartphone battery upgrades have slowed significantly.
This delay is attributed to the critical importance of battery component safety. Given the potential risks to user safety, even minor errors in battery components can cause significant damage to smartphone brands.
With that in mind, Apple's manufacturing distribution for the iPhone 15 series suggests that Apple may not be entirely confident about India's production.
