1. Introduction to WindTerm functions

WindTerm is an open source SSH terminal tool on Github. So far it has received 16.9K stars. It is completely comparable to the MobaXterm tool. The systems and functions it supports are as follows:

3. The latest version of WindTerm

3.1 WindTerm version 2.5.0

WindTerm version 2.5.0 supports all platforms: Linux, MacOS, and Windows.

3.2 WindTerm version 2.6.0

1. WindTerm 2.6.0 version only supports Windows 64-bit systems.

2. Version 2.6.0 adds some new features: Highlight Text (highlight text), OneKey, Trigger, Sync Terminal Folder ( synchronize terminal folder ), Sysmon ( system monitoring program ).

4. WindTerm installation tutorial

The WindTerm installation and usage tutorial will be described around version 2.6.0.

4.1 Windterm requires no installation, unzip and double-click to run WindTerm.exe  

 1. Winterm requires no installation . After downloading the software compressed package from Github, directly decompress and double-click to run WindTerm.exe .

 2. Select the user data storage directory. It is recommended to save it to the same directory as WindTerm.exe. Here I saved it to the E drive.

The interface when opening WindTerm for the first time is as shown in the figure:

4.2 Windterm default pane layout 

1. The layout button is in the upper right corner of the interface . The default supported layouts are: left pane, right pane, and bottom pane;

2. In addition to supporting panes, it also supports setting menu bar, status bar, and shortcut bar;

3. Also supports resource manager, file manager, historical commands, send, session, Shell, and transfer functions.

5. WindTerm usage tutorial  

5.1 Windterm simple pane layout

Place the pane on the left , enable the session function in the left pane , and hide the remaining panes and functions. as the picture shows:

5.2 Windterm focus mode

5.2.1 Turn on focus mode  

Focus mode is also in the upper right corner of the interface (left of the layout button ):

Click the focus mode button, and the configuration interface will pop up. If you don’t like the default configuration, you can modify it and enter focus mode;  

5.2.2 Exit focus mode  

There are two methods to exit focus mode :

1. Directly click the "Focus Mode Button" to exit ;

2. Click the "three dots" in the upper right corner of the interface , and then click full screen to exit.

5.3 Windterm session usage guide

The following will focus on the session functions, including  SSH, Telnet, and Serial .

5.3.1 Create an SSH session to connect to the virtual machine 

5.3.1.1 Create SSH session

SSH configuration notes :

  • Host: must be set to the virtual machine IP address;
  • Port number: The device must be a virtual machine port;
  • User: must be set to the user name in the home directory of the virtual machine;
  • Otherwise the SSH connection will fail. 
  • It is recommended to check : Automatically log in next time (you don’t have to enter your password every time you log in);
  • Check "Automatically log in next time" and the master password setting interface will pop up. If the password is empty, just click OK .

5.3.1.2 SSH login to virtual machine successfully 

SSH successfully logged into the virtual machine, as shown in the figure:  

WindTerm 2.6.0 version adds the function of  synchronizing terminal folders  (this is simply the epitome of MobaXterm).

5.3.1.3 SSH login to virtual machine fails  

1.  Proxy authentication failed, please try other methods;

2.  Identity verification failed, please try again;

3. SFTP session failed to allocate

If it prompts: Authentication failed , you need to enter the SSH session. Only try password authentication is checked , and all other check boxes are unchecked .  

If it prompts: SFTP session failed to allocate , you need to enter the SSH session and uncheck enable SFTP .  

5.3.2 Upload or download virtual machine files through SFTP

Right click on the label - select Session Settings:

Set the file/folder, the default upload or download directory.

5.3.2.1 Upload local files to the server

Method 1. Drag and drop to upload files to the server’s file manager  

Method 2. Drag and drop to upload files to the server terminal  

Method 3. File Manager-right-click- menu bar to upload files/folders  

5.3.2.2 Download server files to local

1. Unfortunately, it is currently not found that Windterm supports drag-and-drop downloading of files;

2. If you want to download the file, you can right-click - download in the menu bar .

5.3.3 Modify virtual machine files

Modifying files on the server will automatically download the file to the local computer first, and then send the file back to the server when modified and saved.

5.4 WindTerm shows or hides blanks, line numbers, fold marks, and timestamps  

5.4.1 Default interface display 

By default, blanks, line numbers, fold marks, and timestamps are displayed. as the picture shows:   

5.4.2 Manually configure display or hide  

1. Manual hiding :

    In the processing of blanks, line numbers, fold marks, and timestamps, right-click to uncheck and hide the corresponding functions;

2.  Manual display :

    Click to view - If the corresponding function is checked in the margin , it will be displayed again.

5.5 WindTerm Log

Setting up logs: Session - Logs - Settings

1. Log type;

2. Log options;

3. Log file name, including setting the log file size.

5.6 WindTerm terminal settings 

Session - Preferences - Settings 

5.6.1 Application settings 

1. Select No Session  , the session will not start automatically when opening the software;

2.  Select the last session , and the last session will be opened automatically when you open the software;

3.  Select the specified session , and the customized session will be opened when the software is opened.

5.6.2 Appearance settings  

Appearance settings support:

1.  Language (default is simplified Chinese);

2.  Theme (default black, can be modified to white );

3.  Window transparency (default opaque).

5.6.3 Security settings ( lock screen timeout )  

Safe mode:

1.  Lock screen - lock screen timeout (default is 30 minutes without operation, lock screen, modified to disabled );

2.  Login wizard (use default configuration).

1. If you use the lock screen function, you need to click "Lock Screen" on the main interface , and then set a password or lock screen and other functions.

2. If the lock screen timeout is changed to disabled , the screen lock function will no longer take effect.

5.6.4 Label settings   

Label settings: 

1.  Tag function (the default is to activate the tab page by hovering the mouse for 0.2 seconds, change it to never );

2.  Mouse operation (use default configuration).

5.6.5 Function settings ( right-click to paste text content )  

Terminal settings: 

1.  Features (use default configuration);

2.  Mouse operation - right click (the menu is displayed by default, modified to paste text );

3.  Paste the dialog box (using the default configuration). 

5.6.6 Automatic completion function settings 

Autocomplete function settings:

1.  Completion function (the automatic completion function is supported by default and can be modified to disable the automatic completion function );

2.  Appearance (use default configuration).

5.6.7 Historical command settings  

1.  Capacity (commands are retained for 30 days by default and up to 10,000 entries, which can be modified );

2.  Storage (use default configuration).

5.6.8 Text settings ( automatically copy selected content )   

Text settings: 

1.  Features ("Auto-copy selected content" is not supported by default, modified to support "Auto-copy selected content" );

2.  Spacing (use default configuration);

3.  Zoom (use default configuration).

5.6.9 Text font settings 

Font settings:

1.  Font family (default is Roboto Mono, you can choose it yourself );

2.  Font thickness (default is normal, you can choose it yourself );

3.  Font size (default 10 pixels, optional ).

*Note: Uncheck the theme font to set the font size and other functions.

5.6.10 File Manager Settings 

File manager settings: 

1.  Features ("Show hidden items" is not supported by default, you can check it if you have special needs ).

5.7 WindTerm shortcut functions 

Click on the main interface-lower right corner-Settings

5.8 WindTerm window functions

Window function settings support:

1.  Horizontally split view;

2.  Vertically split view;

3.  Split groups horizontally;

4.  Split the group vertically;

5.  Merge into groups.
