NVIDIA open source kernel driver Nouveau maintainer Ben Skeggs resigns

NVIDIA GPU kernel open source driver Nouveau maintainer Ben Skeggs announced on the mailing list that he has resigned from Red Hat and withdrawn from Nouveau development.

Ben Skeggs, who previously worked for Red Hat, has been the maintainer of Nouveau since 2008. The last patch he submitted added the kernel driver to improve hardware support for RTX 20/30 series graphics cards using the NVIDIA GPU system processor GSP firmware, adding preliminary support for the RTX 40 Ada Lovelace GPU.

According to reports , Ben Skeggs has largely dominated the kernel driver part. He has been the first contributor to the Nouveau kernel driver while working at Red Hat.

Ben Skeggs said choosing to step down as a maintainer was a personal decision he had been considering for several years. With GSP-RM greatly simplifying support for future hardware, and the community built around the NVK, everything is currently in good hands, so it's time to explore other new things.
