1. Types and functions of cloud servers

Businesses can choose from several types of cloud servers. The three main models include:

Public Cloud Server: The most common expression for a cloud server is a virtual machine (VM), or computing "instance." A public cloud provider builds its own cloud computing platform (infrastructure) and uses the network to provide interface or console-based computing instances to users on the Internet. This model is widely known as Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS). Common examples of cloud servers include Alibaba Cloud Server, Tencent Cloud Server, Hengchuang Technology Hong Kong Cloud Server, etc.

Private cloud server: A cloud server can also be a computing instance in an on-premises private cloud. In this case, the enterprise provides cloud servers to internal users over a local area network and, in some cases, to external users over the Internet. The main difference between public cloud servers and private cloud servers is that the latter exist within the enterprise's own infrastructure, while public cloud servers are owned and run outside the enterprise.

Dedicated cloud servers: In addition to virtual cloud servers, cloud providers can also offer physical cloud servers, also known as bare metal servers, which actually dedicate the cloud provider's physical servers to the user. These dedicated cloud servers (also known as dedicated instances) are typically used when enterprises must deploy a custom virtualization layer or mitigate the performance and security issues that typically accompany multi-tenant cloud servers.

2. Advantages of cloud servers

Ease of use: One of the biggest benefits of cloud servers is that users can configure them in minutes. With public cloud servers, businesses don't have to worry about server installation, maintenance, or other tasks that come with physical server ownership.

Globalization: Public cloud servers can “globalize” workloads. With traditional centralized data centers, users can still access workloads globally, but network latency and outages can degrade performance for geographically distant users. By hosting duplicate instances of workloads in different global regions, users benefit from faster and often more reliable access.

Cost: Public cloud servers follow a pay-per-use pricing model. This can save businesses money compared to traditional physical servers, especially for workloads that only need to be run temporarily or are used infrequently. Cloud servers are often used for such temporary use cases, such as software development and testing, and for high scalability. However, depending on usage, cloud servers can be more expensive long-term and full-time than deploying physical servers directly.

Performance: Because cloud servers are typically multi-tenant environments and users have no direct control over the physical location of these servers, VMs may be adversely affected by excessive storage or network demands from other cloud servers on the same hardware. This is often referred to as the "noisy neighbor" problem. Dedicated or bare metal cloud servers can help users avoid this problem.

Outages and Recovery: Cloud servers are subject to regular and unpredictable service outages, often due to failures in the provider's environment or unexpected network outages. For this reason, and because users have no control over the cloud provider's infrastructure, some enterprises choose to keep mission-critical workloads in on-premises data centers rather than in the public cloud. Additionally, there is no inherent high availability or redundancy in the public cloud. Users who require higher availability for their workloads must intentionally build availability into their workloads.
