I graduated in 22 years, from Tencent to Byte, how are I doing now?

First experience in the workplace

The environment of the factory is really good

All the memories seem to be yesterday. In August 21st, I started my first internship in my life.

Floor 12A36, Shenzhen Bay Science and Technology Ecological Park, Tencent TEG. The experience of coming here for the first time, although it has been 2 years, I still can't forget it. In the hot summer of Shenzhen, I took the escalator from Gaoxin South Station and got out of the station. The entrance is the lobby of the Renaissance Shenzhen Bay Hotel, where many luxury cars are parked. There are also exquisite sculptures and fountains at the entrance of the hotel. The ecological park is very big. After walking around for a long time, I realized that the entrance to 12A is just at the exit of the subway, go straight and turn right.

Passing 12A, I saw the Tencent logo at the entrance of the lobby, and I was a little excited. Although it was very hot outside, the air-conditioning in the lobby was blowing out, and there was a unique fragrance from Tencent.

Holding the visitor code, he entered the building under the guidance of the security guard. The building is also divided into high and low areas, and it was a bit confusing for the first time to sit.

When I went up to 36F, I took pictures of the beautiful scenery, which is amazing. At the height of the 36th floor, you can actually see the landmarks of Shenzhen. Ping An Financial Center and Window of the World Eiffel Tower to the east, Qianhai Free Trade Zone to the west, Shenzhen Bay Chunsun to the south, and Vientiane World to the north. As if working here, life is like hanging out. Compared with the environment where I was studying in college at that time, this place can be described as heaven.

The workplace does not support idlers

On the first day when I came to the company, a classmate next to me hurriedly finished his resignation and I watched him leave. We also added WeChat, thinking that it would be convenient for us to ask questions in the future. And I finished my internship here.

On the third day of joining the company, an outsourcing classmate came. He graduated two years earlier than me and sat in the position vacated by the resignation.

The mentor told me that "the workplace does not support idlers", and there I have to write a daily report to record my output every day. I think this is a good management method, which allows interns to communicate with their superiors in a timely manner. It also forces myself to continuously improve my ability and make greater output.

For me at that time, it was a very rare opportunity to work in Tencent, so I cherish it very much. I will study by myself in the company every weekend. To be honest, it feels quite cool, and the weekend itself is quite boring, and I don’t know what to do if I go home. In the company, the environment is also good. I am the only one on such a large floor. The joy of enjoying a 2,000-square-meter floor alone makes me unable to stop.

During that time, I often went down to dinner with my "tablemate", both of us front-end. In the communication, I also felt the helplessness in the workplace. If you are a capable person, this is an amusement park for you to have fun. If you are an ordinary person with average business ability, it will be more embarrassing.

He told a lot of his stories. For example, he worked in many industries, but it was not easy to do it. His resume was wasted, so he came back to try outsourcing programmers. Tell me the inside story of outsourcing companies, resume packaging, inflated work experience, etc.

A month later, he resigned. Not producing enough.

The night before we left, we rode shared bicycles to the downstairs of Binhai Building, and I said I wanted to stay here. He said "come on".

The premise of all good things is that you are good enough

After his deskmate left, his seat was vacant for a long time.

Later I heard that he was lying dead at home. Of course, he was still looking for another home. I heard that the offer offered to him by the next family has also increased his salary.

There is also an intern who joined the job 2 months earlier than me and has always been absent-minded. Although I'm still doing my internship here, I've already made up my running plan. When he finished his long vacation, he told us that he got several offers. It's mainly Shopee's sp. After getting this offer, I didn't have many interviews. Because it was a school recruitment offer, the salary for an early internship is basically the same as that of a formal entry, so his resignation is also expected.

Before he left, several of us interns often leaned on the railing at the door of the toilet in the corridor, looking at the Ping An Building in the distance, and chatting. I am a relatively dull person, and I mainly listen to them about interview information and market conditions.

In January 22, I had already passed the autumn recruitment at this time. If I remember correctly, I asked my mentor if I could become a regular. The mentor told me that I was not good enough to meet Tencent's standards. For example, a senior from Shenzhen University before, his enthusiasm for technology killed me in seconds, but I didn't manage to surprise them.

However, I heard that the experience of the senior of the deep university was quite bumpy. He practiced intermittently at Tencent from his sophomore year until his senior year. It was not until one month before graduation that I was added to the next department.

I no longer have any hope that I can stay in Dachang, but I always like to dream, maybe it can?

For the dream, the first sprint

Saved from hopelessness. What you want, you have to take the initiative to fight for it. Instead of expecting others to give you alms, it is better to be good enough yourself.

My biggest problem at the time was that I had to go to work during the day and had too little time to study at night. But it just happened to be in time for the Chinese New Year, and I had a relatively complete holiday. After the Chinese New Year, I also tried my best to delay going to work. In fact, at that time, I was also struggling in my heart, whether I could become the miracle of becoming a full-time official, because at that time, 0 people in the department successfully became a full-time employee. But also looking for new opportunities.

I prepared a 30-day sprint for myself, because according to the time of spring recruitment in previous years, it will start at the end of February. I found information on the Nuggets, and I was learning like crazy. Print it out, bind it into a book, learn it over and over again, recite it, and comprehend it. From day to night, from night to day.

I often look out of the window in the dead of night, and I don’t know whether I will get light or darkness if I persevere. But there was always a subconscious picture in my subconscious that I finally made it. It was that picture that supported me through the big nights.

The spring recruitment started later, but the big factories basically did not open. Byte opened, I heard that there is hc, but I have not sent any news. I voted at the end of February. Successively invested in many companies.

  • Tencent, at the end of March, I clicked on the official website to give up the regularization assessment and delivered the CDG
  • Bytedance, two jobs in Shenzhen were delivered at the end of February
  • Xiaohongshu, I found a referral on Maimai
  • Meituan, official website delivery
  • shopee, official website delivery
  • Baidu, although I don't know if there are any recruits, but I voted first.
  • ZTE
  • netease
  • bego ……

Anyway, I basically invested in all the companies that I knew at the time. As a result, in March, I only received written tests from Meituan, NetEase, Shopee, and Byte. No news after it was done.

During that time, I was still quite anxious, and I went home to live every night. Every day when commuting on the subway, I would stand and flip through the pages of my documents. After returning home and taking a shower, I have to study a little more. Still tired every day. Especially the eyes are very hard.

Every time I go to the cafeteria to eat, I tell the only remaining interns around me to really hurry up and prepare, the pace of spring recruitment is very fast, and it will basically end at the end of April. Let her take things to heart. But she said that she was still busy with her graduation project and couldn't spare any energy.

things finally turned around

I don't know how long it took, but in the afternoon, a call came, and it was Byte who made an appointment for an interview. What I was more worried about before was that there were many hcs in Byte Beijing, but I submitted two positions, both of which were in Shenzhen. I was worried that there would be a lot of competition, so I never got hired.

The subsequent interview process went very smoothly. After four interviews, I received an offer within a few days. On a typhoon day in May, I packed up a bunch of things and left Tencent. After a weekend of rest, I joined Byte.

The intern girl in the back, because she didn't find a job in the whole spring recruiting, dragged on after graduation, she just became a social recruit, very passive. However, the latter department should have helped her apply for the hc of Tencent's subsidiary, and returned to her original position after leaving the job for a month or two. It is also a good result. Because the market was really bad at the time.

Finally came to Byte, as a regular employee

May 16, the first experience of the universe factory

I got up early, copied my ID card, and took the subway out. Byte and Tencent are not far apart, only a few hundred meters on foot, but the mood is different. Thinking about where I will go after graduation, I feel really lucky.

One thing that Byte does very well is that it does not distinguish between outsourced and regular employees on the badge. There is no distinction between new employees and old employees on the job number. No distinction is made between high and low ranks. This will weaken the "class consciousness" in the company. After all, in Tencent, there are blue cards, green cards, and orange cards, and a bunch of colors are used to distinguish people.

After receiving the computer, the latest 16-inch m1pro, I really feel that the company treats employees very well.

The new workstation is on the 37th floor, facing north, and the scenery is similar to what I saw in Tencent. However, I feel that the employees of Byte will be younger in Shenzhen. In Tencent, there are a lot of people with 10+ years of qualifications. It may be that the place I was in at the time was the "Tencent Civil Servant" department, which is more wlb.

Infrastructure is really fragrant

In Tencent, worker bees can be used to manage the code, and they encapsulate a layer of client for git. So I have never been very good at using the git command line at Tencent. Come to the byte, I learned the git command line for 3 days, and finally gave me the whole meeting. Of course, I will continue to learn later and become more and more proficient. Byte uses gitlab here, and there should be no client. This is not so convenient, but it's okay to learn.

But the front-end infrastructure is really delicious. ArcoDesign, this component library alone is quite easy to use. Let the business code only need to focus on the implementation of logic, and not need to pay attention to the implementation details of components. But over there, the project may be relatively old, using js, and there is no component library, so you often encounter a problem. You change the old code, find that the scope of influence is particularly large, and then fix the bug. Using TypeScript here, the probability of correcting bugs will be much smaller.

Relatively speaking, the technical atmosphere at the front end will be better. After all, there are nuggets and bytetech communities, which shows that the company attaches great importance to technology construction.

bam is also quite good. The backend defines the interface on it, and the frontend can directly get the ts code of the interface.

There is also Feishu, a pretty good office software.

The process is more standardized

The departments where I practiced before may be more flexible in scheduling requirements due to their different natures. But here, because some of them have promised the delivery time to customers, they will be more strictly controlled, and they will make a schedule plan in advance.

Including that each version has a complete prd, which has been passed down by word of mouth before, basically only a ui draft will be output, and no one will remember the specific interaction details later.

The back-end API interface also has a specific platform definition, and has a version number to control it. Previously, the interface document was directly defined in the wiki.

Tech atmosphere will be better

Because the current department is a large front-end department, the front-end has not been divided into various businesses, so more people who understand the biweekly sharing will listen to it, and there will be enough people to support the biweekly sharing.

Confused, but not anxious?

The current environment can really make people confused and anxious. The originally conceived career development plan will be interrupted due to various reasons. It is reasonable to be confused. After all, I think the boss in charge of the business now should not know which direction is the best.

The atmosphere of the Nuggets is also changing, and articles that don't talk about technology may be more popular now. Technology is in an upward cycle, and it is a tool for us to get promoted and raise our salary to realize our ideals in life. But now, when everyone doesn't know what will happen tomorrow, it is human nature to offer more sympathy and warmth to each other.

The working environment is changing

When I go to the cafeteria to eat, I listen to the people around me chatting, run to learn, and run away when I feel unhappy. But the mobility of people around me is actually very low now. Those who resign voluntarily are generally those who do not want to find a job in the short term, and not many succeed in job-hopping.

During the meal, the news that everyone talked about was not very optimistic, such as layoffs, and various manipulations.

I don't understand the status quo

There are a lot of resigned people around. Now the market environment is deteriorating and job opportunities are decreasing. But many voluntarily resigned. In the upward cycle, it is understandable that everyone achieves salary increases through job-hopping. But now the salary increase expectations are a bit broken. Anyway, I asked a few people around me, those who change jobs, those who cut their salaries and pay equal salaries are 50-50.

I don’t know whether it’s because our society and economy are developing so well that many people can make ends meet without working, or it’s true that dreams are very precious. I didn't understand this point. After all, if you voluntarily resign from a big factory, the opportunities outside may not be better.

I'll work hard, but I won't pin all my hopes on it

For me, the work is quite fulfilling. I'm not one to separate my work from my life. Work is just another game for me. In fact, whether it is playing games, going out for entertainment, or working in a company, as long as you can get happiness, satisfaction, and a sense of accomplishment, that's fine.

I have to find something to do, and the boring life will make me sick. I'm one of those restless characters. So recently I also wrote a vscode plugin to play with.

One of the reasons why I don’t like going out to play may be that going out to play is actually harder than work, and going out to play can’t get the joy of self-growth brought by work.

But this is the case now, and the future is uncertain. Maybe after working for 2-3 years, the enthusiasm will decline? But for now, I still like this job very much.

You can find things to do outside of work to enrich yourself. However, the probability of success is not high. We have spent more than ten years of study to adapt to the current position. We should try to do some other things without too much expectation. We can do it, but we don’t need to invest too much emotion to consume ourselves.

Calm is the best emotion, and no physical energy will be wasted on regulating emotions. Put more energy into the things that really help change the outcome.

write at the end

I don't know if I am a different kind, and I don't want the real world to disturb my heart. Regardless of whether the external cycle is good or bad, I will insist on doing what I want to do to make myself happy.

at last

If you want to become an architect or want to break through the 20-30K salary range, then don't be limited to coding and business, but you must be able to select models, expand, and improve programming thinking. In addition, a good career plan is also very important, and the habit of learning is very important, but the most important thing is to be able to persevere. Any plan that cannot be implemented consistently is empty talk.
