Systemctl is a systemd tool mainly responsible for controlling the systemd system and service manager.
Systemd is a collection of system management daemons, tools, and libraries designed to replace the System V inception process. The function of Systemd is to centrally manage and configure UNIX-like systems.
In the Linux ecosystem, Systemd is deployed in most standard Linux distributions, only a few distributions are not yet deployed. Systemd is usually the parent process of all other daemons, but not always.

Systemd first experience and Systemctl basics

1. First check whether systemd is installed in your system and determine the currently installed version

Note: systemd is run as a parent process (PID=1). In the ps command output above with the (-e) parameter, selects all processes, (-a) selects all processes except the session leader, and uses the (-f) parameter to output a full format listing (i.e. -eaf).

Also note the trailing square brackets in the example above and the remainder of the example. Bracket expressions are part of grep's character class expressions.

4. Analyze the systemd startup process

LOAD   = Reflects whether the unit definition was properly loaded.
ACTIVE = The high-level unit activation state, i.e. generalization of SUB.
SUB    = The low-level unit activation state, values depend on unit type.
1 loaded units listed. Pass --all to see loaded but inactive units, too.
To show all installed unit files use 'systemctl list-unit-files'.

10. Check if a unit (such as cron.service) is enabled

# systemctl is-enabled crond.service

11. Check if a unit or service is running
