Write a paper without building a corpus! Only need Foxit Reader Advanced Search

Foreword:

You can use the summary of NewBing to read recent papers (refer to my evaluation post:
Will New Bing play a more powerful auxiliary role in scientific research than ChatGPT? - Strengthening Apprentice's Answer - Know )

In the process of writing a thesis, I often encounter difficulties in how to express certain terms in my own field. Even with tools like ChatGPT for polishing, it is difficult to directly guide you in terms of collocation in the professional field. The best way is to refer to articles from top conferences and journals in your field to check the expressions of native-speaking authors.

Usually, you use Google Translate, but it can only tell you that a collocation is an A, and your brain vaguely remembers seeing it in a paper before, maybe a B, but can't remember which one article. At this time, everyone will think of an ancient tool called "corpus".

When I was taking a Ph.D. English class, the English teacher suggested that we build our own corpus when reading articles, so that it is easy to search when writing. But usually reading papers is already a headache. How can I copy the PDF file and paste it into the corpus software piece by piece? So I've never built this corpus (really not lazy.jpg).

But when writing a thesis, many key terms, especially fixed collocations, can only be written by memory. For example, in the field of robotics, there is a confusing collocation, "robot manipulation tasks", should it be translated into "robotic manipulation tasks", "robotics manipulation tasks" or "robot manipulation tasks"?

Taking this as an example, the following describes in detail how to use "Foxit Reader" as a corpus, referring to the expressions of native-speaking authors.

Preparations before using "Foxit Corpus":

  1. Foxit Professional Edition, the genuine software of general schools will provide.
  2. Put the pdf papers you have read before into a large folder

Call "corpus":

  1. Open any of the above pdf articles with Foxit PDF Reader.

  2. Click on the upper right corner of Foxit Reader to search:

  3. Then select 高级搜索, select 所有文档位于, and find the total path you just made.

  4. Just search for keywords.

  5. After the search is over, you can fold the folder path and directly display the pdf file name.

My folder has at least 200+ pdfs, and only one article uses this combination. It seems a bit problematic. Let's change the collocation:

this is basically more reliable, let's click in and see how others use it:

  6. Click the plus sign, you can read the sentence, click the sentence, you can directly open the corresponding PDF file, and then mark the keywords you choose, which is very convenient.

  1. Finally, for advanced usage, you can see that case, whole word matching and so on are basically enough.
