How to Change Automatic Maintenance Settings in Windows 10

Maintenance activities are applications or processes that help maintain the health and performance of your Windows PC. Maintenance includes keeping Windows and applications up to date, checking security, and running malware scans.

Windows Automated Management (WAM) is a set of enhancements to the Task Scheduler API that can be used to link applications into Windows Maintenance Plans. Specifically, WAM allows you to add activities that need to be scheduled regularly but do not have exact time requirements. Instead, WAM relies on the operating system to choose the right time to activate tasks throughout the day. The system chooses these times based on the least impact on the user, PC performance, and energy efficiency.

This tutorial will show you how to change the Automatic Maintenance settings for when routine maintenance tasks run, and whether to allow scheduled maintenance to wake the computer to run at the scheduled time in Windows 10.

1. Open the Control Panel (icon view), and click the "Security and Maintenance" icon.

2. In "Security and Maintenance", expand "Maintenance", and then click the "Change Maintenance Settings" link under "Automatic Maintenance".

3. Select the time you want automatic maintenance to run each day, and then check (enabled - default) or uncheck (disabled) Allow scheduled maintenance to wake my computer at the scheduled time. When finished, click OK.

By default, Automatic Maintenance is set to wake the computer at 2am and run maintenance tasks.

4. If prompted by UAC, click/tap "OK".
