There is an unprecedented scene in the field of scientific research, as if all eyes are on the same thing.

For condensed matter physics such as superconductivity, the words of laymen may be limited to cheering, but this does not prevent more and more academic leaders from coming to "crowd".

The most recent opinion was Terence Tao, a famous mathematician and tenured professor at UCLA. Last Sunday, he made a surprise comment on room-temperature superconductivity.

Tao Zhexuan said that although he has no relevant field knowledge to directly comment on the research on LK-99 room temperature superconductivity, and many experts he has contacted are skeptical about it.

Terence Tao believes that he can use his experience in mathematics as an analogy. In a typical math project research, sometimes it takes months to solve a problem, not only that, a little mistake in the middle will lead to various failures or only a small part of success, such a tortuous road will continue Continue until we gain enough experience and intuition to find the right way.

However, these failures are actually very instructive, and Terence Tao hopes that people will share these failures more openly.

Terence Tao also said he had seen reports on LK-99 that the initial announcement was made prematurely and that the research was still at a stage where it was "partially successful at best." So, by the criteria of "successful, completed research," this study did perform poorly. But as a scientific research that "research is in progress and accidentally revealed to the public", Tao Terence tends to be tolerant, and we can wait patiently for the scientific results.

In this ten-second video, a piece of material is suspended above two square magnets, showing "perfect diamagnetism." According to the author, the researchers optimized the process during the firing process and added some other compounds, but the specific technical content will not be announced until the documentation is clear.

If diamagnetism is confirmed, it would be an important step towards verifying LK-99's superconducting ability.

Yesterday, the B station account "Alchemist A Xiang" sent an audio to explain the video. He said that his group is currently conducting further tests, and the magnetic levitation phenomenon only proves the diamagnetism of the sample, and does not mean the discovery of a superconductor. And even if the phenomenon of superconductivity is discovered, whether it can be applied and the degree of application is still far away.

In any case, the academic enthusiasm for LK-99 must be a good thing, because it brings new variables. At present, people's research on high-temperature superconductors is largely based on practice before theory. Introducing new methods to existing theories may allow us to slowly unveil the veil of room-temperature superconductivity.
