CMD

The Windows command prompt (cmd.exe) is a shell program used to run Windows programs or some DOS programs under Windows NT ; or a shell program used only to run programs under Windows CE . It is used to replace COMMAND.COM and "MS-DOS Prompt" provided in Windows 9x system. The original version of Command Prompt was developed by Therese Stowell.

Function

The command prompt provides users with a command line interface , which is implemented through the Win32 console . Users can run programs and batch files through the command line for system management, etc. In addition, Command Prompt supports piping and redirection.

Difference from COMMAND.COM

The command prompt is a Win32 application, and COMMAND.COM is a 16-bit DOS application , which is used to support old DOS applications and needs to run in NTVDM.
