[Editor's note] Microsoft plans to completely migrate the Windows operating system to the cloud through Windows 365 to provide high-quality services based on artificial intelligence and achieve a seamless digital life experience, and integrate this service in Windows 11, while working with custom chips Partners collaborate to realize that vision. In addition, Microsoft has launched an AI assistant called Windows Copilot, and is working with AMD and Intel to develop next-generation CPUs to further enhance Windows' AI capabilities.

A newly exposed Microsoft internal document reveals the long-term goals of Windows development.

Microsoft has been actively advancing its development plan to migrate Windows to the cloud, with Windows 365 as the leader on the business side. But the software giant plans to pursue a similar strategy in the consumer market as well. In an internal "state of the business" report in June 2022, Microsoft floated the idea of using "Windows 365 to allow the full version of the Windows operating system to run on any device through the cloud."

This presentation is part of the ongoing FTC (Federal Trade Commission) hearings on Microsoft, which are open to the public. The meeting discussed Microsoft's overall gaming strategy and how it interrelates with the rest of the company's business units. In Microsoft's "Modern Living" consumer division, the "Windows 11 Going Cloud" strategy is seen as a long-term opportunity to combine cloud computing and client devices to provide higher quality artificial intelligence-based services and enable A seamless experience of digital life.

Windows 365 is a service that streams a full version of Windows to various devices in real time. Although this service is currently mainly for business users, it has been deeply integrated in the Windows 11 system. In an upcoming update, the Windows 365 Boot feature will be introduced, which will allow Windows 11 devices to directly connect to a PC instance in the cloud when booting, rather than a traditional local Windows system. In addition, the Windows 365 Switch function will also be integrated in Windows 11 to make better use of cloud PCs in the task view (virtual desktop) function.

The idea of fully migrating Windows to the cloud to meet consumer demand is inseparable from the investment of custom silicon partners. Microsoft has already tried something with its Surface Pro X device powered by an ARM chip. Bloomberg also reported in late 2020 that Microsoft was considering designing its own ARM-based processors for servers and even Surface devices. Recently, we also heard that Microsoft may also be working on its own artificial intelligence chip.

In Microsoft's presentation, it mentioned the key needs of "Modern Work" in fiscal year 2022, namely "increasing the commercial value of Windows and countering ChromeBook market competition." Among them, they see a long-term business opportunity, which is to use Windows 365 to enhance the application level and breadth of cloud computing.

Recently, Microsoft launched an AI assistant called Windows Copilot, which is a feature built specifically for Windows 11. Windows Copilot is embedded in the Windows 11 interface, which can preview your activities in the application, modify them, and even interpret them. Microsoft is currently conducting internal testing and promises to roll it out to test users by June and roll it out to more Windows 11 users in the future.

Windows Copilot is part of Microsoft's deep integration of AI into Windows strategy. Microsoft is also working with AMD and Intel to develop next-generation CPUs so that it can provide more Windows functions to meet user needs. Intel and Microsoft have even hinted at the possibility of Windows 12 in recent months. Panos Panay, the head of the Windows business, announced at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) earlier this year that "AI will completely subvert your experience on Windows." These are all part of Microsoft's larger vision for Windows, which Microsoft read in its internal presentation as "enabling more powerful AI-driven services in Windows."
