Barefoot P4 accelerates SDN

In June 2019, Intel announced the acquisition of a company called "Barefoot", which aims to help Intel's data center division "better respond to the changing needs of cloud data center customers." Many readers may not have heard of the company Barefoot. In fact, its rapid development has formed a force for traditional network switching chip manufacturers such as Broadcom and Intel.

A programming language: P4

As early as 2014, Barefoot, Intel, Google, Microsoft, Stanford University and Princeton University jointly published a paper called "P4: Programming Protocol-Independent Packet Processors", which also represented the official birth of the P4 programming language.

P4 is essentially a Domain Specific Language for network packet processing. It can be seen from its full name that the main feature of P4 is that it has nothing to do with specific network protocols, which coincides with the booming concept of SDN (Software Defined Networking).

What I bring to you today is the technology sharing about P4 at the 2019 Intel® Network Technology Symposium (Shenzhen Station).
