ChatGPT has quickly become one of the most important technology launches since the first Apple iPhone in 2007. Chatbots are now the fastest-growing consumer app in history, attracting 100 million users in just two months — but it's also a rapidly changing AI shapeshifter that can make it confusing and confusing measures.
That's why we've put together this regularly updated explainer to answer all your burning ChatGPT questions. What the hell can you do with it? What does ChatGPT stand for? In this guide, we'll focus on OpenAI's own ChatGPT model, which launches in November 2022. Since then, ChatGPT has sparked an AI arms race, with Microsoft using a form of chatbot in its new Bing search engine and Microsoft Edge browser. Google responded, announcing a chatbot called Google Bard, tentatively billed as an "experimental conversational AI service."
ChatGPT still has some advantages over Google Bard, which is out now, and other ChatGPT alternatives we've tested, but these are just the beginning of ChatGPT's competitors and offshoots. OpenAI now provides APIs (application programming interfaces) for developers to build their skills into other programs, as well as some new plugins. In fact, Snapchat has released a chatbot called "My AI" that runs on the latest version of OpenAI technology, while a new learning experience called Duolingo Max runs on its new GPT-4 model .

What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is an AI chatbot originally built on top of a series of large language models (LLMs) collectively known as GPT-3. OpenAI has now announced the availability of its next-generation GPT-4 model. These models can understand text prompts and generate human-like answers because they have been trained on large amounts of data.
For example, ChatGPT's original GPT-3.5 model was trained on 570GB of text data from the internet, which OpenAI says includes books, articles, websites, and even social media. Because it was trained on hundreds of billions of words, ChatGPT can create responses that, in its own words, resemble "a friendly and intelligent bot."
This ability to produce human-like and often accurate answers to a wide range of questions is why ChatGPT is the fastest growing app ever, reaching 100 million users in just two months. The fact that it can also generate prose, articles and poetry only adds to its appeal (and controversy in areas like education).
But early users also revealed some limitations of ChatGPT. OpenAI said its responses "may be inaccurate, untrue and sometimes misleading". OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also admitted in December 2022 that artificial intelligence chatbots are "extremely limited" and "it would be wrong to rely on it for anything important now."
Still, the world is currently exploring ChatGPT, and although there is a paid ChatGPT Plus version, you can still use it for free.
What does CHATGPT stand for?
ChatGPT stands for "Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer". Let's look at each of these words in turn.
"Chat" naturally refers to the chatbot frontend that OpenAI built for its GPT language model. The second and third words indicate that the model was created using "generative pre-training," which means it has been trained on large amounts of text data to predict the next word in a given sequence.
Finally, there is the "transformer" architecture, which is the type of neural network that ChatGPT is based on. Interestingly, this transformer architecture was actually developed by Google researchers (opens in a new tab) in 2017, and is particularly suited for natural language processing tasks such as answering questions or generating text.
