Empowering full-stack software, open source software coordination, I have a new understanding of Intel

I. Introduction

"Open source empowers an inclusive future", from June 11th to 13th, 2023, I had the honor to participate in the 2023 Open Atom Global Open Source Summit.

"Empower Chinese software and build an open ecosystem together." At the conference site, I felt Intel's investment in the open source community, from the underlying operating system, cloud native architecture, to databases, artificial intelligence, big data, and solutions for various industries, enabling full-stack software and promoting an open ecosystem .

2. Cultivate an open source culture

At the main venue on the morning of June 11, Arun Gupta, chairman of the CNCF Foundation and vice president of Intel Corporation, gave a keynote speech "Cultivating an Open Source Culture" that left a deep impression on me.

"An enterprise's open source needs to be bound to its core business, otherwise it is unsustainable."

These 7 points can help us build a good open source culture:

  1. The choice of an open ecosystem is to meet customer needs, leverage open source software to deliver platform value, build a scalable product portfolio, open up new markets, drive technological advancement, and have more than 20 years of relentless work experience in the open source community.

  2. The Office of Open Source Programs (OSPo) works to foster an open source culture in organizations, develop open source policies, ensure license compliance, guide collaboration with upstream communities, and optimize tools to facilitate the use of open source software.

  3. InnerSource, an approach to applying open source principles and best practices to closed source software, including using tools and methodologies such as branching/cloning, unified codebase, continuous integration/deployment, issue tracking, test-driven development, code review, and Git manipulation.

  4. Internal events, enhancing collaboration within the company, cultivating relationships, promoting and recruiting engineering talent, and planning external speakers.

  5. Practice the open source foundation, promote open ecology, maintain technical standards, shape future technologies, enhance cooperation, enhance organizational reputation, and expand brand and personnel influence.

  6. Open source advocates drive and refine open source policy, raise awareness, and provide successful business cases for open source program offices within business units.

  7. CW^2, works quietly behind the scenes, devoting a lot of time to non-glamorous tasks such as code review, debugging, group leadership, community meetup organization, new member orientation, and conference speech review.

With a good foundation of open source culture in the enterprise, it can better serve customers through open source projects and open source spirit, and influence the open source community. Over time, the entire open source environment will get better and better.

3. On-site exhibition experience

The aforementioned enabling full-stack software is Intel's global strategy. In the Intel exhibition area, four directions of open source achievements were displayed, namely:

  • Linux operating system and solutions;
  • cloud and edge;
  • Cross-platform Android experience;
  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Let me talk about the two directions that I am more interested in.

One is the cross-platform Android experience. Through the Celadon project, Intel can natively run Android applications on Intel's CPU. This means that for some usage scenarios with complex high-performance requirements, such as the H3C 8K cloud screen, Android devices generally cannot meet the performance requirements, and Celadon can get rid of the hardware limitations of the device.

We can run Android apps smoothly on PC. You can visit Intel’s official website , find the “Go to experience” button, and enter the download page.

The other is artificial intelligence and machine learning. As we all know, stable diffusion has relatively high hardware requirements, and Intel's BigDL-Nano open source acceleration software library can make it run on Intel integrated graphics. The picture below is my live experience at the Intel booth.

4. Soft and hard collaboration sub-forum, build an ecology with community developers

On the morning of June 13th, in the open source sub-forum on collaboration between hardware and software, experts from Intel and developers from the community shared relevant topics.

In the field of basic software, Intel joined the Dragon Lizard community early and invested heavily. It won the Best Technical Team of the Dragon Lizard Community in 2022, the Outstanding Contribution Award and many other awards. In addition, Intel has also established strategic partnerships with Tongxin UOS and Kirin Software, and continues to maintain close cooperation and coordination.

In the on-site theme sharing, Intel also maintained the rhythm of sharing with open source community contributors. For example, in the theme sharing of Intel's basic software empowering China's ecology, it was Yang Jiguo from Intel's Software and Advanced Technology Division and the Dragon Li community. Intel Arch SIG maintainer and Alibaba Cloud development engineer Shang Xuchun came to share, which can reflect Intel's open and sharing attitude towards the open source community.

5. Come and join the open source community

To be honest, before I participated in the 2023 Open Atom Global Open Source Summit, my impression of Intel was still as a hardware manufacturer. After participating in this conference, I found that Intel has participated in more than 100 open source projects, contributing, managing and maintaining With more than 300 communities.

As a developer, if you haven't joined the open source community, I recommend joining the open source community, participating in open source projects, and experiencing the cultural atmosphere of the open source community.

At the end of the event schedule on June 11, it was raining heavily outside. When we left the exhibition hall, the sky outside was already clearing up. Everyone witnessed the beautiful double rainbow from every angle. I hope this double rainbow will make our open source The community keeps getting better and better!
