Introducing Ronin: Axie Infinity's Ethereum Sidechain

Translator's Preface

Different types of applications have different needs when looking for scaling solutions for decentralized applications. The current expansion solution is mainly to design a general-purpose Layer1 high-speed public chain, or a Layer2 Rollup designed for DeFi applications, and a more suitable solution is to develop a dedicated blockchain for the specific needs of the application, which we call the application chain. Adapting to the habits of mainstream Internet users, the application chain development paradigm with better user experience will become a trend. We believe that the application chain will usher in an explosion in the future.

Based on this concept, Axie Infinity has developed an exclusive Ethereum sidechain, Ronin, for its blockchain games. By transferring the main operations from Ethereum to the application chain, the user's cost of use is reduced by several orders of magnitude; the response speed becomes faster; and the Ronin wallet integrates the payment gateway, which greatly reduces the entry threshold. Through the deployment of Lisk, the number of Axie Infinity users has exploded in the past two months, and the number of daily active users (DAU) has soared from 38,000 at the end of April to 252,000. We see Axie Infinity as a successful example of Lisk. Therefore, this article is translated for the readers.

text

From the early days of Axie Infinity, we have been obsessed with bringing fun gameplay and sound economic design to the blockchain gaming world. Our community has grown tremendously, and we've started some really novel experiments around the idea of real ownership and monetization of games. Along with this growth, we observed major pain points for our community when playing Axie.

One problem that has been a permanent thorn in our side is congestion on the Ethereum network. Network congestion is a tricky beast - gas fees have been low for months, then spiked back up, bringing our economy to a standstill.

Scaling Axie with Ronin

In order for Axie Infinity to reach our 2nd, 3rd and 4th tier relationships (our friends, family friends, family), Axie needs a long-term solution where players can play Axie economically, quickly, cheaply and seamlessly game. We need it to be fun and easy.

That's why we're announcing today our work on Ronin - an Ethereum sidechain developed exclusively for Axie Infinity. A masterless samurai in Japanese feudal society, Ronin represents our desire to take the fate of our products into our own hands.

Benefits for Axie Players

Ronin will allow us to take the usability of Axie to the next level, allowing us to welcome the next generation of tamers, thinkers and explorers to Lunacia.

Ronin will bring:

  • Fast and seamless transactions with almost instant confirmation.
  • Significantly reduce Gas costs. Also, gas fees can be kept by the community and used for things like tournaments and bounties, compared to paying Ethereum miners.
  • Ability to return Axie assets to Ethereum mainnet (eventually).
  • Simplify the process of onboarding new users with a custom wallet solution.
  • A block explorer for transparency and data accessibility.

why are we building this

We believe that a general expansion solution that takes into account all aspects is not advisable. When it comes to scaling solutions, every product, every community has different needs. Additionally, current scaling solutions are often designed for DeFi use cases or simple asset exchanges, whereas the needs of the Axie community are more complex (and interesting!).

We believe that building solutions to our community's most difficult problems is worth the extra effort. A strong example of this is the internal Axie marketplace. While Axies trades on various other NFT exchanges, 97% of all trading volume happens through our marketplace. While we strongly believe in the open and collaborative ideals of Web 3.0, we also believe that no one puts as much care, thought, and intuition into products that serve our communities as we do.

Security and Consensus

To help keep Ronin safe, we've recruited all-star partners from the traditional gaming, cryptocurrency, and NFT token worlds to serve as validators for our network.

We will announce Ronin validators closer to launch.

The future of Ronin

The following information comes directly from Trung, CEO of Sky Mavis:
"We are very excited about the possibilities that Ronin brings. Although it is still in its early state, Ronin will continue to evolve in a few years to serve the spirit of blockchain gaming and temperament. On the technical side, we are also working on various solutions to further enhance and scale Ronin. For example, zKSyncs looks promising, but it may take time until it can be used in a production environment - especially For NFTs and games."

As Vitalik himself just mentioned today (Translator's Note: 2020.6. 30), current layer 2 implementations are "largely limited to payments and DEXs". We are interested in contributing to the sustainable scaling of NFTs on Ethereum - an area that has not received enough attention. Loom Network's pivot away from NFTs also accelerates our plans to control our long-term scaling strategy.

What does this mean for your Axies & Land?

Our plan for the current Axie infinity assets (Axies, Land, Land items) is to migrate them to Ronin this year. The Sky Mavis team will handle the migration for users, but users can choose to do it themselves if they wish. We will redeploy all important Axie related smart contracts on Ronin. This will also be an opportunity to upgrade our existing contracts to make Axie's user experience more intuitive.

By depositing Axies in a smart contract on Ethereum. When Axies are in the contract, they will be usable on Ronin.

We'll write a detailed blog post about the migration once we get closer to the event itself.
