Xtekky said that since the project is not directly connected to the company's APIs, OpenAI should not target him for using other sites' APIs, especially since those APIs are not protected on the public web.
"OpenAI could also contact these sites and warn/notify them, and then work with me to take down the content, but it looks like this (legal threat) is coming from OpenAI entirely, and what they're saying is basically, this project of mine is directly attacking OpenAI, said Xtekky.
If the owner of these sites has questions about his script queries, they should contact him directly. For example, Xtekky has already removed scripts using phind.com, ora.sh, and writesonic.com at the request of some websites.
Perhaps more importantly, Xtekky pointed out, these sites can prevent external use of their internal APIs through common security measures, such as blocking API traffic from IPs other than their own.
Xtekky said he has advised all the sites he wrote to to secure their APIs, but none have done so. So even if he pulls those scripts from his repo, other developers can do the same.
Now, even in the face of warnings from OpenAI, Xtekky has decided to keep the repository. And, he also directly told OpenAI that if they want to take it down, they should make an official request to GitHub instead of himself.
"I think they contacted me earlier to force me to delete this repository myself," he said, "but the correct way would be to submit a formal DMCA request through GitHub."
And, even if GPT4Free never existed, as long as the APIs of these sites remain unprotected, anyone can find a way to use them.
"Right now, GitHub users are sharing and hosting the project everywhere," Xtekky said, "and it won't matter if I delete my repository."
