1 What is Media Independent Interface (MII)?

Media-independent interface ( MII ) is a standard interface connecting MAC and PHY. It was originally used to link 100 Mbit/s Ethernet to PHY chips. It was later standardized by IEEE 802.3u, requiring the MII interface standard to be applicable to any type of PHY chip. , no matter what kind of bus the PHY chip is connected to, it must be supported, such as optical fiber, twisted pair, etc. The advantage of this is that any MAC can be used with any PHY, regardless of the network signal transmission medium.
The MII can be used to connect the MAC to an external PHY using a pluggable connector as shown in the figure below.
