Zabbix has been updated very quickly. Since 2009, multiple versions have been updated. In order to use more new features of zabbix, an upgraded version will follow. Zabbix version compatibility is a priority that must be considered.
Client AGENT Compatible
All agents from zabbix1.x to zabbix2.x are compatible with zabbix server2.4: if you upgrade the zabbix server, the client can not make any changes, unless you want to use some new features of the agent.
Zabbix proxy (proxy) compatible
The zabbix proxy is very picky, and the 2.4 version of the proxy must be used with the 2.4 version of the server. Other proxies from zabbix1.x to 2.2 cannot be matched with the 2.4 server. That is to say, if you upgrade the zabbix server, then the zabbix proxy should also be upgraded synchronously.
XML file compatible
The xml files exported by zabbix 1.8, 2.0, and 2.2 can be imported into zabbix 2.4. I once worked hard to make a template on zabbix 2.4, but I couldn't import it into version 2.2. I feel bitter when I think about it.
