Ubuntu developer Canonical's hiring issues spark controversy

Netizens shared their experiences of applying for  Canonical (Ubuntu developer). According to reports, this netizen interviewed for the Ubuntu WSL engineer position. However, at the beginning of the interview, he chose to "run away", because  an email sent by Canonical's HR listed thirty or forty questions, and asked job seekers to answer in PDF form.

So the netizen decided to withdraw the job application after seeing the email.

As can be seen from the screenshot of the email provided by this netizen, these questions involve educational experience, software development engineering experience, personal industry influence, as well as views on Canonical and understanding of Canonical culture (inspecting cultural fit), etc. Some people think that Canonical's move is not to recruit talent, but to drive away talent. Because these questions undoubtedly keep the best candidates out.

In the message of the post, some netizens shared their technical interview experience:

  • phone screen
  • Complete online tasks (usually 4-30 hours)
  • Automated Online Coding Challenge
  • Coding interview by video call (usually 3-5 rounds)
  • Whiteboard interview to examine architectural knowledge (1-2 rounds)
  • Cultural fit interview (1-2 rounds)
  • The line manager interview and the last four interviews can be combined into a single "onsite interview", with basically 6-8 hours of consecutive interviews if you're lucky.
