WebP_Support: More Than You Think

WebP is a smaller alternative to JPEG and PNG invented by Google. Recently, there have been a lot of doubts about WebP support. In detail, what can and cannot be done with it, such as browser support, CMS support and so on. Today I want to clear all your possible doubts. WebP is actually much better supported than you might think.

WebP Browser Support
Not all browsers support WebP, so it's important that you know which browsers do, which may influence your decision whether to convert and use WebP images in your website or project. Below are all the major browsers and their WebP support levels.

As of July 2016, the global browser support rate for WebP is 69.6% – caniuse.com

Chrome WebP
Google Chrome officially supports WebP since Chrome 23) (originally released November 2012), partially supported since Chrome 9. Partial support means that there is no support for lossless, alpha channel-enabled WebP.

Google's Android browser officially supports WebP since version 4.2 (originally released in November 2012), and partially supported since version 4. Google Chrome for Android supports Webp since Chrome 50.

Opera WebP
Opera officially supports WebP since Opera 12.1 (originally released in November 2012) and partially supported since Opera 11.5. Partial support means that there is no support for lossless, alpha channel-enabled WebP.

All current versions of the Opera mini browser officially support WebP.

FireFox WebP
Firefox does not currently support WebP. This is being discussed in bug 856375 on the Mozilla forums.

Internet Explorer WebP Neither
Internet Explorer nor their new Edge browser supports WebP. And there are currently no plans to add support. However, users have spoken out and people are asking Microsoft to add Webp support to Edge.

Safari WebP Neither
Apple's Safari browser nor its iOS Safari browser support WebP. However, a recent tweet from HTML5test said we could expect to see Safari support for WebP in iOS 10. iOS 10 is currently in beta testing, so time will tell.
