Local disks can provide good performance and latency stability, but due to physical machine hardware limitations, it is difficult to compete with cloud disks in terms of reliability and elasticity. Many customers are asking whether there is a product that not only has the flexibility and security features of cloud disks, but at the same time can be close to local disk products in performance.
In order to solve the above customer problems, Alibaba Cloud, based on a new generation of distributed block storage architecture, combined with 25GE network and RDMA technology applications, launched a new ESSD ultra-high-performance cloud disk product, which not only has performance comparable to local SSD disks, but also has cloud disks. It has a 99.9999999% reliability design and supports advanced storage services such as automatic snapshots and data encryption to meet the extreme performance requirements of applications such as OLTP databases, NoSQL databases, and Elasticsearch log analysis. best choice.
Compared with the previous generation SSD cloud disk, ESSD cloud disk has greatly improved performance in all aspects, as follows:
- The random read and write performance of a single disk is as high as 1 million IOPS, which is 50 times higher than that of SSD cloud disks;
- The average latency of single-channel random writes is as low as 100us, which is 80% lower than that of SSD cloud disks;
- The sequential read and write performance of a single disk is as high as 4GB, which is 13 times higher than that of SSD cloud disk;
- The storage performance of a single cloud server can reach 1 million IOPS, and the overall storage performance is improved by 500%;
- The price is consistent with the SSD cloud disk, and the cost performance is increased by 330%;

Compared with the highest-performance cloud disks of mainstream manufacturers in the industry, ESSD cloud disks achieved excellent test results in single-channel latency, with an average write latency of about 100 microseconds. significantly ahead of other manufacturers.
This means that in OLTP business scenarios, in the same period of time, compared to cloud disks from other manufacturers, Alibaba Cloud ESSD cloud disks can carry more IO accesses, greatly improving business access capabilities, and are especially suitable for using It is used in the core online business of customers in industries such as Internet finance, e-commerce, O2O, and large enterprises.
In the actual business scenario test, taking MySQL and PostgreSQL as examples, using ESSD cloud disk can achieve 3-4 times TPS performance improvement.
