Detailed explanation of session mechanism

Detailed explanation of Session mechanism

Reprinted from: http://justsee.iteye.com/blog/1570652

Although the session mechanism has been used in web applications for a long time, there are still many people who do not understand the nature of the session mechanism and cannot properly apply this technology. This article will discuss in detail how sessions work and answer frequently asked questions about using session mechanisms in Java web applications.

    1. The term session

    In my experience, the degree of abuse of the word session is probably second only to transaction. What is more interesting is that transaction and session have the same meaning in some contexts.

    Session, Chinese is often translated as conversation, its original meaning refers to a series of actions/messages that have a beginning and an end. For example, a series of processes from picking up the phone to dialing up to hanging up when making a call can be called a session. Sometimes we can see the words "during a browser session, ...", where the word session is used in its original meaning, which refers to the period from the opening to closing of a browser window①. The most confusing is the phrase "the user (client) during a session", which may refer to a series of actions by the user (usually a series of actions related to a specific purpose, such as from logging in to purchasing an item) The process of online shopping such as checkout and logout is sometimes called a transaction), but sometimes it may only refer to a connection, or it may refer to meaning ①, and the difference can only be inferred by context ②.

    However, when the word session is associated with a network protocol, it often implies two meanings of "connection-oriented" and/or "maintaining state". "Connection-oriented" refers to the establishment of a A communication channel, such as making a phone call, cannot start until the other party answers the phone. In contrast to writing a letter, when you send the letter, you cannot confirm whether the address of the other party is correct, and the communication channel may not be established. , but to the sender, the communication has already begun. "Maintaining state" means that one party to the communication can associate a series of messages so that the messages can be interdependent. For example, a waiter can recognize a returning customer and remember that the customer owed a dollar to the store last time. . Examples of this category are "a TCP session" or "a POP3 session"3.

    In the era of the flourishing development of web servers, the semantics of session in the context of web development has a new extension. Its meaning refers to a class of solutions used to maintain state between the client and the server. Sometimes session is also used to refer to the storage structure of this solution, such as "save xxx in session" ⑤. Since various languages used for web development provide support for this solution to a certain extent, in the context of a specific language, session is also used to refer to the solution in that language, such as often The javax.servlet.http.HttpSession provided in Java is referred to as session ⑥.

    In view of this confusion is irreversible, the use of the word session in this article will also have different meanings according to the context, please pay attention to distinguish.
In this article, use the Chinese "browser session period" to express the meaning①, use the "session mechanism" to express the meaning④, use the "session" to express the meaning⑤, use the specific "HttpSession" to express the meaning⑥Second

    , the HTTP protocol and the state hold

    The HTTP protocol itself is stateless, which is in line with the original purpose of the HTTP protocol. The client only needs to simply request the server to download certain files. Neither the client nor the server need to record each other's past behavior. Every time Requests are independent, like the relationship between a customer and a vending machine or a regular (non-membership) hypermarket.

    But smart (or greedy?) people soon discovered that the web would be much more useful if it could provide some dynamic information generated on demand, like adding on-demand capabilities to cable TV. On the one hand, this demand forces HTML to gradually add client-side behaviors such as forms, scripts, and DOM. On the other hand, CGI specifications appear on the server side to respond to dynamic requests from clients. The HTTP protocol as a transmission carrier also adds file upload, these characteristics of cookies. The role of the cookie is an effort to solve the stateless defect of the HTTP protocol. As for the session mechanism that appeared later, it is another solution to maintain state between the client and the server.

    Let us describe the difference and connection between cookie and session mechanism with a few examples. A coffee shop I used to go to often offered a free one for 5 cups of coffee. However, the chance of consuming 5 cups of coffee at one time was very small. At this time, I needed some way to record the consumption quantity of a certain customer. Imagine the following solutions:

    1. The store clerk is very powerful and can remember the consumption amount of each customer. As soon as the customer walks into the coffee shop, the clerk will know how to treat it. This practice is that the protocol itself supports state.

    2. A card is issued to the customer, which records the quantity of consumption and generally has an expiration date. Every time a customer makes a purchase, if the customer presents the card, the purchase is linked to a previous or future purchase. This practice is to maintain state on the client side.

    3. Issue a membership card to the customer, and no information is recorded except the card number. Every time the customer makes a purchase, if the customer presents the card, the clerk will find the record corresponding to the card number in the store's record book and add some consumption information. . This practice is to maintain state on the server side.

    Since the HTTP protocol is stateless, and it is not desirable to make it stateful due to various considerations, the latter two solutions have become a realistic choice. Specifically, the cookie mechanism adopts the scheme of maintaining state on the client side, while the session mechanism adopts the scheme of maintaining state on the server side. At the same time, we also see that since the server-side state-keeping scheme also needs to save an identity on the client side, the session mechanism may need to rely on the cookie mechanism to achieve the purpose of saving the identity, but in fact it has other options.

    3. Understand the cookie

    mechanism The basic principle of the cookie mechanism is as simple as the above example, but there are still several problems to be solved: how to distribute the "membership card"; the content of the "membership card"; and how customers use the "membership card".

    Orthodox cookie distribution is realized by extending the HTTP protocol. The server prompts the browser to generate the corresponding cookie according to the instruction by adding a line of special instructions in the HTTP response header. However, pure client-side scripts such as JavaScript or VBScript can also generate cookies.

    The use of cookies is automatically sent by the browser to the server in the background according to certain principles. The browser checks all stored cookies. If the scope declared by a cookie is greater than or equal to the location of the resource to be requested, the cookie is attached to the HTTP request header of the requested resource and sent to the server. This means that the McDonald's membership card can only be shown in the McDonald's store. If a branch also issues its own membership card, then when entering the store, in addition to showing the McDonald's membership card, you must also show the membership of the store. Card.

    The content of the cookie mainly includes: name, value, expiration time, path and domain.

    The domain can specify a domain such as .google.com, which is equivalent to the head office sign, such as Procter & Gamble, or a specific machine under a domain, such as www.google.comOr froogle.google.com, you can use Rejoice as a comparison.

    The path is the URL path following the domain name, such as / or /foo, etc. It can be compared with a Rejoice counter. The path and domain together constitute the scope of the cookie. If the expiration time is not set, it means that the lifetime of the cookie is during the browser session. As long as the browser window is closed, the cookie will disappear. Such cookies that last for the browser session are called session cookies. Session cookies are generally not stored on hard disk but in memory, although this behavior is not specified by the norm. If the expiration time is set, the browser will save the cookie to the hard disk, and then open the browser again after closing, and these cookies will remain valid until the set expiration time expires.

    Cookies stored on the hard disk can be shared between different browser processes, such as two IE windows. For cookies stored in memory, different browsers have different handling methods. For IE, a window opened by pressing Ctrl-N on an open window (or from the File menu) can be shared with the original window, while a newly opened IE process using other methods cannot share the memory cookie of an already opened window; for Mozilla Firefox0.8, all processes and tabs can share the same cookie. Generally speaking, the window opened with javascript's window.open will share the memory cookie with the original window. The browser's handling of the session cookie, which only recognizes the cookie but not the person, often causes a lot of trouble to web application developers who use the session mechanism.

    HTTP/1.1 302 Found
    Location: http://www.google.com/intl/zh-CN/
    Set-Cookie: PREF=ID=0565f77e132de138:NW=1:TM=1098082649:LM=1098082649:S=KaeaCFPo49RiA_d8;
    expires=Sun, 17-Jan-2038 19:14:07 GMT; path=/; domain=.google.com
    Content-Type: text/html

比如weblogic对于web应用程序生成的cookie,JSESSIONID=ByOK3vjFD75aPnrF7C2HmdnV6QZcEbzWoWiBYEnLerjQ99zWpBng!-145788764,它的名字就是JSESSIONID。

    另一种技术叫做表单隐藏字段。就是服务器会自动修改表单,添加一个隐藏字段,以便在表单提交时能够把session id传递回服务器。比如下面的表单:

     <form name="testform" action="/xxx">
    <input type="text">
    </form>

    在被传递给客户端之前将被改写成:

    <form name="testform" action="/xxx">
    <input type="hidden" name="jsessionid" value="ByOK3vjFD75aPnrF7C2HmdnV6QZcEbzWoWiBYEnLerjQ99zWpBng!-145788764">
    <input type="text">
    </form>

    这种技术现在已较少应用,笔者接触过的很古老的iPlanet6(SunONE应用服务器的前身)就使用了这种技术。

    五、理解javax.servlet.http.HttpSession

[5] http://e-docs.bea.com/wls/docs70/webapp/weblogic_xml.html#1036869

    1、session

    2、session

程序调用HttpSession.invalidate();或b.

http://e-docs.bea.com/wls/docs70/webapp/sessions.html#100770

    iPlanet中有一种很简单的方法来实现共享一个session id,那就是把各个应用程序的cookie路径都设为/(实际上应该是/NASApp,对于应用程序来讲它的作用相当于根)。

    <session-info>
    <path>/NASApp</path>
    </session-info>

    需要注意的是,操作共享的session应该遵循一些编程约定,比如在session attribute名字的前面加上应用程序的前缀,使得setAttribute("name", "neo")变成setAttribute("app1.name", "neo"),以防止命名空间冲突,导致互相覆盖。

    在Tomcat中则没有这么方便的选择。在Tomcat版本3上,我们还可以有一些手段来共享session。对于版本4以上的Tomcat,目前笔者尚未发现简单的办法。只能借助于第三方的力量,比如使用文件、数据库、JMS或者客户端cookie,URL参数或者隐藏字段等手段。

    我们再看一下Weblogic Server是如何处理session的。

    应用程序A :
    context.setAttribute("appA", session);

    应用程序B :
    contextA = context.getContext("/appA");
    HttpSession sessionA = (HttpSession)contextA.getAttribute("appA");

    值得注意的是这种用法不可移植,因为根据ServletContext的JavaDoc,应用服务器可以处于安全的原因对于context.getContext("/appA");返回空值,以上做法在Weblogic Server 8.1中通过。

    那么Weblogic Server为什么要把所有的应用程序的cookie路径都设为/呢?原来是为了SSO,凡是共享这个session的应用程序都可以共享认证的信息。一个简单的实验就可以证明这一点,修改首先登录的那个应用程序的描述符weblogic.xml,把cookie路径修改为/appA访问另外一个应用程序会重新要求登录,即使是反过来,先访问cookie路径为/的应用程序,再访问修改过路径的这个,虽然不再提示登录,但是登录的用户信息也会丢失。注意做这个实验时认证方式应该使用FORM,因为浏览器和web服务器对basic认证方式有其他的处理方式,第二次请求的认证不是通过session来实现的。具体请参看[7] secion 14.8 Authorization,你可以修改所附的示例程序来做这些试验。

    八、总结

    session机制本身并不复杂,然而其实现和配置上的灵活性却使得具体情况复杂多变。这也要求我们不能把仅仅某一次的经验或者某一个浏览器,服务器的经验当作普遍适用的经验,而是始终需要具体情况具体分析。
