Of Study

Bacon

Reading maketh a full man; conference a ready man; and writing an exact man. And therefore, if a man write little, he had need have a great memory; if he confer little, he had need have a present wit: and if he read little, he had need have much cunning, to seem to know that he doth not. Histories make men wise; poets witty; the mathematics subtile; natural philosophy deep; moral grave; logic and rhetoric able to contend. Abeunt studia in mores [Studies pass into and influence manners]. Nay, there is no stond or impediment in the wit but may be wrought out by fit studies; like as diseases of the body may have appropriate exercises. Bowling is good for the stone and reins; 3 shooting for the lungs and breast; gentle walking for the stomach; riding for the head; and the like. So if a man’s wit be wandering, let him study the mathematics;for in demonstrations, if his wit be called away never so little, he must begin again. If his wit be not apt to distinguish or find differences, let him study the Schoolmen; for they are cymini sectores [splitters of hairs]. If he be not apt to beat over matters, and to call up one thing to prove and illustrate another, let him study the lawyers’ cases. So every defect of the mind may have a special receipt.

Translation by Mr. Wang Zuoliang

Reading enriches people, discussions make people witty, and notes make people accurate. Therefore, those who do not often take notes must have a strong memory, those who do not often discuss must be born intelligent, and those who do not often read must be deceived and skilled, only then can they be ignorant and show knowledge. Reading history makes people wise, reading poetry makes people smart, mathematics makes people thorough, science makes people profound, ethics makes people solemn, and the study of logic and rhetoric makes people eloquent. A person's intellect has obstacles, and it is possible to read appropriate books to make it smooth, just like all kinds of physical diseases, all of which can be removed by appropriate exercise. Rolling a ball is good for the testicles and kidneys, archery is good for the chest and lungs, walking is good for the stomach, riding is good for the mind, and so on. If the intellect is not concentrated, it can make reading mathematics, because the problem must be concentrated, and if it is slightly scattered, it must be repeated; if it is unable to distinguish the difference, it can make the reading of the philosophy of the scholasticism, because everyone is a critical person; if not good at seeking common ground, not good at one If one thing proves another thing, one can read the lawyer's case file. In this way, if there is any defect in the mind, there is a special medicine to cure it.

After looking through my log for a long time, I found this sentence.
Thanks for letting me revisit the classic.

Taking this as a lesson, it is recommended that the subject read more and take more notes. Appropriately participate in debates and solve math problems (but I estimate that if the subject has been away from campus for many years, he will no longer have this ability, huh).
It is useful to participate in some gaming games. Of course, don't always think about entertainment, you should learn some game skills as appropriate.

Among the people I have come into contact with, those who are good at math and games (chess) are all thoughtful and thorough.

Hope it helps you.
