Linux Everywhere: The Fat Penguin Under the Hood

BMW, Chevrolet, Honda, Mercedes and Tesla have one thing in common: their cars all run  Linux . The car has become a software platform that runs Linux, and its main rivals BlackBerry's QNX and Microsoft's IoT Connected Vehicles are losing ground. Tesla Inc. uses its own Ubuntu-based solution, and it recently released update 8.1 (17.24.30), which upgrades the Linux kernel version from the ancient 2.6.36 to 4.4.35. AGL is not the only working group to integrate Linux into cars. Ford, Toyota, Mazda and Suzuki have formed the SmartDeviceLink (SDL) consortium to develop Linux-based open source solutions to seamlessly integrate smartphones and cars. Google developed Android Auto. Ride-hailing company Lyft uses Ubuntu extensively, including in self-driving cars.
