“Security for Android” ≥ “Security for iOS”

In a recent interview with foreign media CNET, a security director at Google said that Android is now as secure as all competing operating systems, including iOS.

David Kleidermacher, director of security for Google's Android, Play Store and Chrome OS divisions, worked at California-based search giant Mountain View in May 2017. He said:

  • As Android matures in security, it will become increasingly difficult and costly for attackers to discover high-risk vulnerabilities and launch attacks.

"Do you support Google Android or Apple iOS?" This question has been presented in a one-sided manner. Today, the issue has become a close debate on both sides. Although the two major systems have their own strengths and weaknesses, due to their openness, Android appears to be more insecure and unstable, and has been criticized for this.

In 2016, millions of Android phones were infected with HummingBad malware. A year later, documents released by WikiLeaks revealed that the CIA had developed malware targeting Android devices.

Kleidermacher says:

  • As a global open source project, Android has a deeper security community that can work together to locate deep vulnerabilities and develop protection tools. This community is likely to grow and be more efficient than closed-source projects of similar size.

On Thursday, Google released its latest annual security report for Android. The report contains fairly confident remarks, and seems to imply that Android is more secure than current iOS.

  • In 2017, Android made a major leap in security efforts. We have many security solutions that are leading the industry.

Kleidermacher firmly believes that Google is becoming more and more secure. One factor is that Google pays some freelance bug hunters handsomely. Hunters are paid handsomely for reporting security flaws to Google. Likewise, Apple is offering similar incentives to its developer community. Hackers can get up to $200,000 (about 1.266 million yuan) in bonuses if they can find security holes in the iOS system and report them to Apple.

Google also claims that they are working to remove malware from the Play Store and will integrate a malware cleanup tool in the latest Android update to identify and shut down malware on phones. Google named the feature Google Play Store Protect (ie Play Store Protection). This feature periodically scans for malicious apps and notifies users when they download related apps. And the service detected 60.3 percent of potentially harmful applications (PHAs) through machine learning.
