Take a look: Can you be physically fit to be a pilot?

Just like driving a car, a medical examination is also required to obtain a pilot license. Before obtaining a pilot license, the applicant must go to a civil aviation personnel medical examination and appraisal agency recognized by the Civil Aviation Administration for a medical examination. After passing the medical examination, he can apply for a pilot license.

1. Basic physical condition requirements

1). At least 17 years old;

2). No criminal record;

3). Able to listen, speak, read and write Chinese correctly, without the accent and stutter that affect the two-way radio communication. The applicant cannot meet some of the requirements for some reason. The Administrator shall endorse the necessary flight restrictions on its license;

4). Private pilots must have a junior high school education level or above;

Commercial pilots must have a high school education or above; 

Airline pilots must have a bachelor's degree or above; 

5). Physical and mental health, no psychological or mental disorders, no infectious diseases, diabetes, skin diseases, stomach diseases, kidney diseases, heart diseases, etc., no epilepsy, tuberculosis, stones, hypertension and other diseases.

6). The limbs are healthy, without bone and joint disease or deformity.

7). No color blindness and color weakness, and the uncorrected distance vision in any eye is not less than 0.1.

8). Private pilots require that the corrected or uncorrected distance vision of each eye should be 0.5 or more, and the distance vision of both eyes should be 0.7 or more (glasses can be worn). Corrected or uncorrected near vision in each eye should be 0.5 or more (glasses may be worn) over a distance of 30-50 cm. 

9). Commercial pilots require that the corrected or uncorrected distance vision of each eye should reach 0.7 or above (equivalent to 0.8 on the E-table), and the distance vision of both eyes should reach 1.0 or above (glasses can be worn). Corrected or uncorrected near vision per eye should be 0.5 or more at a distance of 30-50 cm and 0.25 or more at a distance of 100 cm (glasses may be worn).

10). Hongyuan human resources airline pilots require that the uncorrected distance vision of any eye should reach  0.7 or above (equivalent to 0.8 on the E-table), and the distance vision of both eyes should reach 1.0 or above. If the uncorrected distance vision of any eye is lower than 0.7, the following conditions must be met at the same time: the uncorrected distance vision is not lower than 0.3; the corrected visual acuity is not lower than 1.0 (wearable glasses); the diopter is not more than plus or minus 3.00D (spherical lens equivalent). The uncorrected near vision in any eye should not be less than 1.0. If corneal refractive surgery has been done, it will be regarded as unqualified vision.

2.  Physical examination subjects

   Surgery, internal medicine, ophthalmology, ear, nose, throat, blood routine, urine routine, electroencephalogram, electrocardiogram, B-ultrasound, chest X-ray, etc.
3. Physical examination basis

   In order to encourage and develop the cause of general aviation in China, the Civil Aviation Administration of China made adjustments to the management of the physical examination and appraisal of civil aviation recruited flight students on April 23, 2010. Private and commercial flight licenses are mainly based on the "Civil Aviation Personnel Physical Examination Certificate Management Regulations (CCAR). -67FS-R2)" and "Aircrew and Air Traffic Controller Physical Examination and Appraisal (AP-67FS-002)" for physical examination; physical examination for civil aviation recruiting and managing flight students whose goal is to train airline pilots for large-scale air transport , mainly based on the "Administrative Measures for the Physical Examination and Appraisal of Recruiting Flight Students in Civil Aviation", including the requirements for the initial examination, re-inspection and re-examination after admission to the school. At the same time, in July 2010, the Civil Aviation Administration, in accordance with the spirit of the "Notice on Further Regulating Enrollment and Employment Physical Examination Programs to Maintain the Enrollment and Employment Rights of Hepatitis B Surface Antigen Carriers" (Ren She Fa [2010] No. 12), in order to maintain the HBV surface antigen carrier The rights of students to enroll and employment, and the "Administrative Regulations on the Medical Certificate of Civil Aviation Personnel (CCAR-67FS-R2)" and the "Administrative Measures for the Physical Examination and Appraisal of Civil Aviation Recruited Flight Students" (Civil Aviation Fa [2007] No. 37) on "B "Hepatitis Surface Antigen" check items have been deleted.

4. Physical examination and appraisal institutions recognized by the Civil Aviation Administration

    As of 2014, the Civil Aviation Administration has appointed a total of 12 medical institutions as civil aviation personnel medical examination and appraisal institutions, and 7 of them can carry out medical examinations for recruiting flight students in accordance with the "Civil Aviation Recruitment of Flight Students Physical Examination and Appraisal Specifications" (MH/T7013-2006). They are Beijing Civil Aviation General Hospital, Civil Aviation Shanghai Hospital, Civil Aviation Guangzhou Hospital, Civil Aviation Xi'an Hospital, Chengdu Civil Aviation Medical Center, China Civil Aviation Flight Academy Hospital, and China Southern Airlines Guangzhou Aviation Health Center. The remaining 5 medical examination institutions can only conduct initial and re-inspection of private, commercial and airline flight licenses. They are the Civil Aviation Medical Center of Shenyang Civil Aviation Northeast Administration, Beijing Capital Airport Hospital, and the Health Center of China Eastern Airlines Shanxi Branch. Air Sanitation Center of China Southern Airlines Xinjiang Branch, Anyang Third People's Hospital.

 

5. Physical Examination Certificate

    Different from a car driver's license, if the applicant for a flight license passes the medical examination, the Civil Aviation Administration will issue a medical certificate to the applicant. Class I medical certificate is applicable to commercial and airline pilot licenses; class II medical certificate is applicable to private pilot licenses.

It should be noted that the medical certificate of private pilots will be marked with the words "Private Pilot" in the "Restrictions" column; the medical certificate of commercial pilots will be marked "Only for participation in CCAR-91 regulations" in the "Restrictions" column. If you work as a co-pilot in a large airline of CCAR135 or CCAR121, you need to re-examine and apply for a medical certificate. The medical certificate of the pilots of Hongyuan Human Resources Airlines is not marked in the "Restrictions" column. If you need to wear glasses to meet the vision requirements, it will also be marked in the restriction column.

6. Validity period of medical certificate

   The medical certificate is valid from the date of issuance. Age calculation is based on the actual age of the applicant at the time of physical examination. Class I medical certificate is valid for 12 months, and 6 months for those over 60 years old. (The pilots who participate in the "Regulations for the Operation of Large Aircraft Public Air Transport Carriers" (CCAR-121) are over 40 years old for 6 months). Class II medical certificate is valid for 36 months. 24 months for those over 40 years old and 12 months for those over 50 years old. The holder of the medical certificate shall, 30 days before the expiry date of the medical certificate, comply with the Regulations on the Administration of Medical Certificates for Civil Aviation Personnel (CCAR-67FS-R2) and the Medical Examination for Air Crew and Air Traffic Controllers (AP-67FS- 002)” after passing the re-examination, apply for renewal of the medical certificate.
