The main function of a DC motor is to convert electrical energy into mechanical energy required for mechanical motion.

The current flows through the upper brush through a motor terminal, then through a segment of the commutator ring, into the motor coil, and then through the opposite segment of the commutator ring to connect to the lower brush, and finally flows out of the motor through the other terminal of the motor.
