Opensignal, an international network speed testing agency, competed in a speed race with smartphones on the US market. Considering the advent of the 5G era, and at the end of last year, Apple and Google both launched the iPhone 12 series and Pixel 5 that support 5G, so this 5G speed is the focus of Opensignal's analysis.

iPhone 12's 5G speed is not as fast as Android

iPhone still has room for improvement
However, if you compare 4G and 5G speeds, you can find that Apple's growth is particularly significant:

This change may be due to Apple changing its modems in 2020. In the previous iPhone models that only supported 4G, Apple used Intel modems. Starting in 2020, Apple switched to Qualcomm modems used by all leading Android phones in the United States . Therefore, it can be seen that even though the current 5G speed of the iPhone 12 is not as good as many Android phones, the gap is far less than that of 4G speed compared with other brands.
Then the question arises again: Why is the 5G speed of the iPhone still not as good as many Android phones with the same modem? Ian Fogg of the Opensignal analysis team speculates that the difference should lie in the RF design (Radio Frequency, radio frequency), because at this stage smartphone components have exceeded the modem's impact on 5G/4G performance .
