FydeOS releases a special adapted version of Raspberry Pi 400, supporting Android and Linux programs

Since the birth of FydeOS, it has forged an indissoluble bond with Raspberry Pi. Among them, Chromium OS for Raspberry Pi is an open source project that FydeOS has carefully maintained for three years. Constrained by the graphics performance bottleneck of the Raspberry Pi device and the technical difficulty of integrating the graphics rendering of multiple subsystems, the plan to port the complete FydeOS experience to the Pi has not achieved an ideal result. The graphics performance improvement brought by Pi 4B and Pi 400 brings the possibility of realization. After several months of painstaking development, we finally thoroughly researched Pi's graphics driver and successfully integrated the graphics rendering of Chromium OS and Android subsystem. So there is the FydeOS for You-Raspberry Pi 400 released this time.

I hope that FydeOS for You can bring you a Chromebook-like experience that allows Pi 400 to do more for you, and hope that this will allow Raspberry Pi to help more people.

FydeOS for You-Raspberry Pi v11.4 is the first FydeOS for You adapted version released for Raspberry Pi 4B / Pi 400 . The released version contains all the functions and features of FydeOS v11 , among which are particularly worth mentioning:

  • The Chromium browser is upgraded to 86.0.4240.*, which synchronizes all the new features of the upstream browser.
  • Added the ability to automatically mount the system to recognize the disk drive to the "File" program. Under the multi-system startup scheme, the "File" program can access files in the disks of other operating systems. Fixed the problem that a certain process of the Android subsystem continuously scans other disks and causes high CPU usage.
  • Provide optimized "terminal" program, provide theme color setting options and provide multi-tab page switching function.
  • Fix the problem that the Android subsystem cannot be accessed through adb in the previous version under Linux (beta).
  • Fix the problem of duplicate bookmarks that may occur during synchronization.
  • Optimized the security protection required for user registration and login operations.
  • The Installer program is added to the OOBE homepage: booting FydeOS on the USB disk for the first time can directly install without logging in to the system.
  • Added a control switch for system OTA.
  • Added a new  FydeOS remote desktop .
  • A sub-menu item of "FydeOS Settings" has been added to the "System Settings" interface to store the setting items related to special functions of FydeOS.
  • Optimization of FydeOS Controller related functions.
  • Support booting via high-speed USB disk (recommended) and via microSD card.

Due to the particularity of the Raspberry Pi hardware, there are some known issues and precautions in the FydeOS released this time, as follows:

  • In the current kms (hardware acceleration) graphics mode, the FydeOS logo at startup cannot be displayed temporarily, and the system will directly enter the OOBE/login screen after successful startup.
  • In the current kms (hardware accelerated) graphics mode, 4K displays are not supported temporarily.
  • After starting up and entering the desktop for the first time, the system will start to try to synchronize the plug-in, Chrome app, and the components required to install the system under the login account. At this time, the system will experience obvious freezing. This is normal, please wait for a while. This phenomenon will be eliminated by itself after the initialization is completed, and it will not appear after the next restart.
  • When running an Android program, there will be short-lived subsystem graphics not being drawn in time when the Android program's window is presented, which is manifested as geometric patterns in the Android program window. This is caused by insufficient graphics performance of the Raspberry Pi and is normal. Wait a while for the Android program to display normally.
  • Please try not to run too many Android programs at the same time, otherwise it is likely to cause insufficient memory and cause the Android subsystem to crash. The specific manifestation is that all Android programs crash at the same time. If this happens, just wait for a while and reopen the Android program.
  • Due to the limitation of the Raspberry Pi kernel, the system does not support deep sleep. Therefore, we have added a power management strategy to this FydeOS for You to limit the default power saving mode of the system.
