XenServer is an enterprise-level virtualization solution developed by the previous open source Xen Project through commercial development. On 2013/06/24, XenServer officially announced its return to the open source community, all open source, and released the open source XenServer Porject.
The latest version of the current commercial version of XenServer is XS 6.1, and versions after XS6.2 will be completely open source, and the source code of each component will be released one after another.
XenServer History:
2003
It evolved from Lan Pratt's research project at the University of Cambridge, and was first publicly released in 2003.
2004
Xen 2.0 was released shortly after Xen 1.0 was released. At the same time, Lan and others began to pay attention to enterprise-level virtualization and established XenSouorce.
2005
When Red Hat, Novell and Sun chose Xen Hypervisor as the virtualization solution, Xen became popular and released Xen 3.0.
Xen Community first proposed the concept of Paravirtualization, which was adopted by Microsoft and VMWare.
2007
2007/10/22 Citrix System acquired XenSource. Migrate Xen Project to http://www.xen.org. Xen Porject Advisory Board members include Citrix, IBM, Intel, HP, Novell, Red Hat, Sun and Oracle.
2013
2013/4/15 Citrix announced that Xen Project has become part of the Linux Foundation as the Linux Foundation Collaborative Project, and the xen.org website has been migrated to xenproject.org
2013/6/24 Citrix announced the open source XenServer Project, XenServer officially joined the open source community.
