Filter/Blur/Surface Blur

This article introduces the method of using the surface blur filter for dermabrasion.

The basic idea is to use a surface blur filter to blur the skin (dermabrasion), and use a high contrast retention filter to restore the skin texture (texture).

Note: The surface blur filter is computationally intensive, especially for large files that take a long time.

General steps and instructions

1. Repair defects before blurring.

First use the stain repair brush tool to remove skin imperfections, including broken hair, obvious spots and lines.

Note: It is recommended to remove blemishes on the newly created blank layer.

2. Stamp the layer and name it "microdermabrasion".

Shortcut key: Ctrl/Cmd + Alt/Opt + Shift + E.

3. Copy the layer (shortcut key: Ctrl/Cmd + J) and name it "texture". Decolor the "texture" layer (shortcut key: Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + U), then hide the layer.

4. Select the "Surface" layer, convert it to a smart object, and execute the Ps menu: filter/blur/surface blur.

Parameter Description:

--Radius Radius

Specify the size of the fuzzy sampling area.

--Threshold

Control how much the difference between the color scale value of the adjacent pixel and the center pixel value is to become part of the blur.

Pixels with a gradation difference smaller than the threshold will be blurred, and pixels larger than the threshold will not be blurred. Contrary to the threshold in the USM sharpening filter.

The higher the threshold, the more obvious the blur effect.

General operation method of surface blur filter

(1) First increase the "threshold" to the maximum value.

(2) Then reduce the "radius" until the basic contour can be seen.

(3) Then lower the "threshold" back until the main contour edges become clear and the skin is blurred.

5. Display the "texture" layer and convert it to a smart object, and change the layer mode to "overlay". Then, execute the Ps menu: filter/other/high contrast retention. Adjust the radius value until the details are revealed.

6. Select the "Texture" layer and the "Skin" layer, group them (shortcut key: Ctrl/Cmd + G), name them "Skin", double-click to enter the layer style.

7. Use the "mixed color band" in the layer style to ensure that the sharpening range is in the middle tone, please refer to the following figure.

8. Create a black mask for the layer group, and select the white brush tool to wipe out the area that needs to be retouched.

9. According to the actual situation, adjust the value of the filter such as surface blur and high contrast retention again until the best effect is obtained.
