Gary's research goal is to prove that combinatorial logic can provide a foundation for mathematics. In 1933, Gary learned of the Kleene-Rosser paradox in correspondence with Rosser. This paradox proved the inconsistency of some of the formal systems proposed at that time. Because of this paradox, Kleene, Rosser, and Church all gave up on basic mathematical problems. Only Gary insisted on the research, claiming that he would never escape from the paradox. To this end, Gary devoted his life to combinatorial logic and eventually became the founder and master of this field. Combinatorial logic is the theoretical foundation of all functional programming languages today. This theory is very similar to Church's lambda-calculus to a large extent, but the latter has been more influential in recent years.
