MTR is a powerful network diagnostic tool that allows system administrators to troubleshoot network errors, and provide status reports upstream network provider. mtr combines the functionality of ping and traceroute programs in a single network diagnostic tool.
Mtr at startup, it is to investigate the connection between the network host running mtr HOSTNAME thereof and having a low TTL intentionally by sending packets. It continues to send data packets TTL low, and note the response time of intermediate routers. This allows mtr to print the response to HOSTNAME percentage of Internet routing and response time. A sudden increase in packet loss or poor response time generally indicates the link (or just overload).
The results are typically reported as the round-trip response time (in milliseconds) and the percentage of packet loss.
