Ubuntu 24.04 LTS will enable frame pointer by default
Canonical has announced that Ubuntu 24.04 LTS will enable frame pointers by default. With rare exceptions, all Ubuntu packages will be rebuilt with frame pointers enabled, a move that aids performance analysis and optimization. Computer performance expert and Intel Fellow Brendan Gregg said tests of enabling the frame pointer in Java and glibc showed that it added less than 1% to the CPU overhead and was even close to zero. He said that the performance analysis and optimization benefits brought by the frame pointer far outweigh the performance loss. Canonical said that the performance overhead caused by enabling the frame pointer in the Python interpreter will be very large.
